As above really.. I took the car out for a run ( crutches and all :( ) last Sunday. I went to Waterford ( Chewies country) and back, about 100miles in all and now the engine is making a loud ticking noise and seems very sluggish.. anyone got any ideas??

Featured Replies

Richie diid you check it for oil and run a diagnostics check?

Ticking could be a few things from loud injectors to Sticky lifter, but as its down in power and sluggish ii would steer towards worn VVT springs.

v6power, I've not been able to do much as i'm on crutches ( hit and run 2 weeks ago and a dead '05 R1  ) I'll go and check the oil but it should be ok as all the belts were done recently and I was over with the mechanic on Sunday getting my new brembo's bled, problem is he doesn't have too much knowledge of 300's

I think I'll have to put the car away till i can afford a full engine rebuild

Rich it wont be detonation, but ticking and knocking noises are very hard to diagnose over the net. have a look at this thread

if you read through it theres a short vid on engine Knocking, if your not getting this then thats a good sign. How long has the car been off the road?

Im free tomorrow, if you want il pm my number and you can give me a fone, il try and diagnose it that way??

My moneys on low Engine oil ss V6 says.

Had the same thing with mine a few times. Turned out the tubs were leaking oil slightly and after a very long run you can hear the engine ticking when you come to a standstill.

Ok guys , i had my mechanic call over to have a listen and he says that the ticking is coming from the top of the engine and that its not big ends but might be something to do with cams??

i have a similar problem at the moment - when revved slowly the car makes a rattling noise like a diesel engine - fingers cross i think its the VTC springs.

by standing at the bonnet and manipulating the two throttle springs with your thumbs to rev the engine you can get a better idea of what the sound is like and where it is coming from.

good luck mate.

Could also possibly be sticking lifter(s). They can make the top end sound rattley. Plenty of hints on how to try and remedy this if you do a search.

Great news Richie, Told you you cant beat someone actually at the car to listen to the noise.. Yep as i said easlier , worn VVT springs can cuase a heavy ticking noise. though a badly stuck lifter makes the same sound. We put in a good oil flush b4 an oil change and run the engine for 15 minutes as per instructions, always fixes a lifter

Anyways glad you got someone out to take a listen :) its not a hard job to redo the VVT springs if it is them - something else that shoulda been done on the 60K service lol

Marty

It could be a bomb :slap:

I'd plum for VVT springs. Hardly any garage changes them on 60k

Its not ticking anymore as i had a full engine flush yesterday... the fool told me he put all 8litres of oil into the engine and now there is a loud knocking noise and i have oil all over the drivers side of the engine and on my driveway.. It wasn't my usual mechanic by the way... see general discussion "messed up oil change"
