I am looking around for my first Z and have found what I think is a really nice N/A.

From a performance point of view how does the N/A compare to a Twin T?

Featured Replies

Quite a difference really mate, in terms of pull when you nail it and high end power. On the other hand the N/A has very nice non-laggy power delivery. You don't notice much lag on the TT though because the tubs are quite small for that reason. Petrol consumption and insurance isn't as much difference as you might think. On the other hand maintainance is a lot cheaper becuase you don't have to worry about tubs dieing, which is a definate issue if you are looking for a standard Zed at £3-3.5k ish. You should be able to get a nice N/A manual for that money but a TT will be 50/50 if you get a good one, and bills would be higher if its dodgey.

I drove both and ended up with an NA.

The TT is noticably quicker, especially above 70mph.

I ride plenty of fast bikes so I'm no stranger to speed but I really liked the NA I was looking at.

And I'm very tight.

So if £3-£3.75k will only buy me an iffy Twin T then what do I need to spend?

There are a few on the forum going for that sort of money

Hard to say.

Prices are quite low so you might get a nice TT for that money.

There's one in the for sale section for £2999 - it sounds nice but it's in Scotland though!

I'd say a TT is a bit more of a gamble than an NA so just make sure you have a bit of cash in reserve if you go for one in case it does need work - ask Bird, FunkySi or Bantambunny!

You could easily spend another £3K+++ getting a duff one right.

I'm not saying you will get a dodgy one for that, just that they are old and lots of sheds about. The market is terrible for selling at the moment in all jap cars so you may get a bargain, just be cautious. I personally would pay around 5k as for that if you are patient you can get a very good one with a professionally rebuilt engine and new turbos, etc, still cheaper than a new fiesta! Maybe find one thats going for over £4k and try to knock the seller down a bit to what you can afford? Above all get to the meets and look at good clean ones before deciding what to buy. Chances are you'll look at the first one and get carried away as they are very nice cars!!

In terms of milage and what might need repairing, after 80k you should consider:

turbos £1500

Autobox £1000

Engine Rebuild £several thousand

At least if these things are done then you'll hopefully only have to spend money on little things. Not trying to put you off just realistic as the cars are in a price range which is in contrast to what they are to maintain now.

i got one last october time for 3,800 from an ad on this site, it had 4k's worth of receipts from reputable garages and traders on here fior work carried out... the guy i bought it off TOLD me to ring the garages the car had been in at, i did and was VERY happy with the authenticity of the work... cheers Gaz i still absolutely LOVE the car...

it had a manual conversion, had been chipped and the boost upped... all in all the engine was spot on and i got a great car...

i have since spent a bit on it doin the suspension and a full respray amongst other things but the key here is the fact i had a great starting point..

good luck with your search, and if you arent a mechanic take one with you when you go look at a car...
