It can be done with the engine in, but you need the plenum off.

As Andy said... Did this to mine over a year ago, the det sensor is right in the middle of the V but to get to it it's a plenum off job...

Are you getting a continuous code 34?

I know that you can fit a det sensor in a new position without removing the plenum.

You can find a link with full write up on http://www.twinturbo.net.

Yep, continues code 34 and get safety boost most days (but not all the time. Its a bit intermittant).

I've been told the sensor can be relocated. Is this a good idea?

do a search for znuts threads, I posted the details for the resister mod. Plenum (intake manifold) off takes maybe 3 hours if you havn't done it before. You remove the fuel connections, the coil connectors, inj connectors, most of the big vac pipes, the egr pipe connections on either side, coolant connections at rear side, tubes at rear, the list goes on.... You are better off doing the resister mod if you've no other reason to take it apart. You'll probably develop issues after pulling apart all the old cooked wires and pipes.
