Help needed on Jeff TT headlight upgrade

I cannot get the 12mm screws out that hold the headlight in. When you get past the air filter section they are the ones that are nearest to the Radiator, i.e. furthest away from the front of the car.

I have tried to get all sorts of spanners etc in that tight space but cannot get enough turn to start to unwind the nuts. Is there some kind of special tool or something that you guys (Jeff TT) know of to get in there?

I have even bought a palm ratchet but still cannot get my hand in there to turn it.

They are a bastard and a half to get to. I managed it, but I replaced them with smaller bolts & washers, upside down, so that you only have the hold the nut with a ring spanner underneath and use a ratchet on top.

I think I finally got them out with a ratchet ring spanner. You have to move some pipes around though and I think I also took the electric fan out.

Get a small 12mill socket and put blue tack on the end and inside the socket, squeeeeeeeeeezzzee your hand into the gap to - push home the socket onto the nut (knuckle skinner) and it should hold itself on the nut (that FUCKING NUT!)

Now get a thin extention (I cant remember the size - the smallest wratchet you can get)

You need to remove the both airbox pipes and I possibly the electric fan...

Push the thin extention into the socket and then work the wratchet head onto the extention.... you need a very small wratchet and its a bitch of a job... watch it dont slip off - it will take the skin off your knuckles and punch a hole in your rad if it does.

Its a shitter frown.gif

Just come in from the garage having managed to get the o/s headlight out!!!!! Yippee!!

I am now a tool shop authority having gone to every tool/spares shop within travelling distance.

The tool that you need to get the bolts out is a mini ratchet with a flexible head, one that the handle can angle up through 180 degrees. I bought a Draper set today with three mini ratchets in it for £14.99. You still need the other spanners also; Open ended and ring (preferably with a slight offset).

I would also recommend taking the wheels off to get easier access to the bolt behind the inner wheel arch. You can do it without taking the wheel off but it's worth the effort taking the wheels off.

I'll post more when I make some progress.

Can anybody recommend any upgrade bulb types.

Grant

P.S. If I wasn't so far from Jeff, for what he charges I would let him do it.

P.P.S. If this don't work I'll be paying you a visit Jeff.

Great stuff!

Yep the wheels off is alot easier smile.gif

Take your time taking the light glass off - use a hairdryer for ages to get the sealant maliable and use caution when prizing the glass off - at first you will think that there is NO way that glass is coming off - but with plenty of patience and lots of heat on the glass the lens will come apart...

Just make sure you have a HomeBase nearby for the silver foil stuff - my car has been in a zillion bits for 3 weeks now coz I cannot find the silver foil - no Homebase on the Isle of Wight !! frown.gif

So hopefully Jeff will be sending me some -

post up some pictures of your upgrade when its done, i think the end product is gonna be well worth all the skinned knuckles!!

Enjoy the holidays...

I noticed that after heavy rain the inside of my headlamps were misting up so I figured that while I had them apart I may as well have the Jeff TT upgrade at the same time. The problem was weather to book it in with Jeff or have a go myself, the problem being that I’m in Essex and would have a long journey so probably adding about £50 in petrol to the cost.

Having read this thread I’m now convinced that it is a journey well worth making and will be in touch with Jeff soon. wink.gif

I spilt my headlights for cleaning a couple of months back and it wasn't too difficult, once you manage to get the buggers off. I used a hot air gun to melt the goo, probably better than a hairdryer as it gets hotter. Steve or Grant, I'd be happy to give you a hand if you want, I'm not far away.

Andy your a star smile.gif

Should be getting the car back from SE with another set of new turbos next Saturday. I will email you then.

Hmmm.... Andy that`s how I started then next thing you will have 10 cars a week turning up!! which is my average now had 6 in one day not so long ago!! trouble is I just love working on these cars so I can`t say no. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Happy Zedder Jeff TT

I'd add that I wouldn't have dreamt about doing the upgrade if it hadnt been for Jeffs write up smile.gif

Top tech article...

Jeff,

I have a proper fulltime job so I don't have time for 6 Zeds a day, but I do get a steady trickle of cars in my spare time. Johnny was trying to stitch me up with installing traction control on a bunch of MR2's, but I declined as it's a real pain in the ares on those. One of the few jobs that is actually easier on a Zed !

Steve M8, trust me it's worth the travelling, i came over from I.O.M to chester, drove down to near Coventry, stayed in hotel the nite, then went to Jeffs, before driving back to Heysham, quite expensive couple of days in travelling and hotel costs, but fook me, it's worth it !!!!!!!

Smithy cool.gif

Andy, yeh having done a few tc on zeds the install is not too bad, but the operating control knob is very low quality in my view and looks like something out of a seventies car when fitted. a little more thought there please Racelogic. Jeff TT

Jeff if you like working on these cars that much, how about doing my headlamp upgrade for 20 squids biggrin.gif.??????

prats like myself dont need lights anyway as we are so dangerous we drive around in the dark.....just my opinion by the way

Headlights are now chromed and ready to go back in the car. I decided not to chrome around the bezel, just a personal choice. I will try and post a picture. I don't think this will make a difference to the output, will it?

Steve R, if you want a hand doing it then you're welcome to pop round. I think second time around it would be a lot easier.

Should be finished some time this afternoon.

I finished the Bacofoil Headlight upgrade Monday Night. It really has made a difference even with the standard bulbs.

The beam is noticably brighter on the offside, the whole beam is brighter overall and there is a much clearer defined outline to the pattern.

I always found that driving around country lanes at night was hazardous especially when taking a right hand bend and the beam just ain't there on the o/s.

Does anyone know if the Philips Vision Plus bulbs are available for the Z?

Is anyone using the Philips Blue Vision bulbs?

Grant

Grant,

I have a small collection of bulbs you could try, and we could do a bit of back-to-back comparison with my standard lights at the same time.

Sounds like a plan coming on. I am around at the weekend if you want to meet up.
