Morning people,

Ive noticed that when I switch my lights on (or fogs), Im getting a belt noise - like a quiet squeal.

Im presuming any heavy electrical device will cause this.

Now I still have problems with a belt slipping (either power steering or alternator) - Im using some spray belt grip temporarily whilst I order new power steering belt as this was a cheapie fitted.

Thing is - does it sound like the alternator belt wants replacing, It sorta gives a high pitch whine/squeal but not very loud when lights are on.

Sounds like the belt needs replacing/tightening .. as you use more current from the alternator it adds more resistance to the belt .. hence the slipping noise when you put your light on ... probably adds between 10-15 amp load on the alternator

right, the belts are now over tight, so 3 mechanics have told me :)

Not a goof thing - the alternator belt is a brand new Gates and the right size. And its extremely tight - not sure if it was this that was slipping.

The PAS belt is a cheap one - Ive posted about this before. Again - this is now overly tight.

I cant/dont want to tighten them anymore. Im thinking of replacing them both and starting from scratch again.

All this since I changed to a bloody unorthodox pulley :(

Oh and no, its not coming out the speakers - Thanks :)

Cheers.

overtight will squeal just like a slack belt

Right there bud, overtight is worse infact because you can fook the bearings in the alternator.

correctemundo!!

change the belts bud .. if theyve been slipping chaces are theyre now thinner than original hence the over tightening as they slip deeper in the pulley groove

I got a slight squeal from my belt until i recently changed the water pump. now its silent and ive not changed the belt. Not the easiest and quickest of jobs to do but might be worth considering when all else fails.
