after all these threads about knocking/det etc. im starting to get worried about a noise that my engine has recently started to make.

if you rev, in gear, slowly up the scale, once it reaches about 2600rpm it suddenly sounds like an old diesel engine, exacly like an old diesel engine. this continues up the rev scale although ive only taken it slowly up to 3500ish before backing off.

under normal driving it wont make the noise, even when i thrash the car a bit. it still performs ok and doesnt make the noise. it only happens when you slowly build the revs up, and again only after about 2600rpm.

ok bring on the bad news :(

EDIT: it makes the sound in neutral too. :(

not to scare the bejesus out of you, but Ive had big end noise a few times, and at free revving its ALWAYS become audioable at ~2500rpm if its on its way out.

on time it was really bad and did it at tickover, but that was a VERY ovaled rod lol

Mine makes the same noise but only in second when crawling up the rev range. To me it sounds like a loose manifold of something similar.

My car cam with alot of history and this is something that has been investigated several times according to it, but with no outcome.

id defo say you got a bearing on the way out.

get it done asap, it can still cause damage even if u cant hear it knocking or at low revs!

So on your say-so he should have an engine rebuild even if he can't hear it and the noise hasn't been identified properly?

Take it to an expert and see what they think.

Don't panic just yet.

it might be something as simple as worn VTC springs, which can make the engine sound like a diesel as well.

have someone with a conzult turn the VTC solenoids on/off while the engine is idling..especially if the solenoids are turned on the engine will sound like a diesel with worn VTC springs.

just unplug the vtc solenoids and see if the noise goes.it wont cause any damage.but you will notice power loss if you drive it with them disconnected.

can you ID where they are in relation to the piccie mate?

could be a stuck lifter as well, i had one and my engine sounded terrible, my oil was fairly low and not getting much pressure so topped it up and it free'd it and all was well in the zed world again :)

Oh, and by the way, it does not sound like big ends. They would make orrible noises when under load, i.e. being driven.

I get a tappety noise at number 9 on the picture above, near the oil filler cap! Its not a nock, just tappety. I can hear it at idle! Is this anything to worry about?

>> can you ID where they

it's either 26 or 27 (hard to see on the picture)..there's a connector with 3 wires (o2-sensor) and a connector with 2 wires (VTC solenoid)

and 24 or 25 (same story)

lol. Nothing to worry about then?

Sorry to add my two pence worth, but how the hell can anyone diagnose a noise over a forum. I know I have asked these type of questions before but only to point me in the direction of a maybe.

If you have noise, take it to an expert, meaning talk to the man that knows and not the man that thinks he knows.

Dave, Gimme a call and if i manage to get time, I'll pop over to have a listen.

Cheers fella

^^ What he said

One persons interpretation of a noise can differ from anothers.

Thats it then. No more asking about noises coming from wherever. Take it to an expert instead. This forum will now shrink by about 50%.

i spoke to an expert on the phone and from my description it sounds like it could be the VTC springs - the noise is like something rattling against the cam end cover and is coming from the front of the engine (as you stand at the bonnet). they're going to be taking a look at it soon.
