Hello all, sorry to jump in like this - but I am an expat..... Bought a Z TT a couple of monhs ago and now have just noticed smoke from LHS exhaust when hot, not enough to help global warming but not a good look. I had a read of this on your tech article:

Grey Smoke with light Blue on Full Temp - This is the Sign of the dreaded rear turbo seal failing, this can usually be attributed to wear of the engine or component failure, will need the seal replacing to regain full performance, new seal - 20 quid , cost of labour 650 quid :

and that seems to be it...... As I have full power I assume it is a seal that is leaking not turbo failure...yet. So my questions are:

Could it be anything else (please please!). If it is seals how long before more problems. Lastly is it possible to do turbo out while engine is in car?

BTW Great site and forum .............. go the All Blacks ( and me a Welshman)

Cheers, Martyn in NZ

As I understand it, turbo re-work = engine out, I am sure the boffins will confirm this during the waking hours.

If it's white smoke it "could" be something as innocuous as condensation.

It only appears when engine is warm and only one bank, so far all that I have read says condensation is only on startup.

Is it on idle or on acceleration?

Cannot see any smoke in rearview mirror when I drive off but have not had anyone follow me yet to confirm. I was reading online service manual and it seems like a 5 minute job to pull a turbo...........LOL

when the car is running the turbo seals are under pressure so probably wont leak, if it only does it on tick over (when the turbo isnt under a lot of pressure and is "relaxed") then i'd say it WAS the turbo seals..

a mates 200sx had the exact same problem..

have you de-cated the car,,,,my mate has been smoking from the LHS from the day he got it and it's been on the Zrun to germany on the Nurburgring.....if you have a straight through exhaust than you may suffer from no backpressure. this can make you turboseals leak.....

..and yes turbo seals is engine out for RHS but you can get to the LHS with the engine in ..it is a bit of a SH!T though......

hope it help's bud .....

The car is standard, spoke to local turbo guy and seal is the problem. He says no problem to use, it will just slowly get worse... Have had a good look at turbo out - will have to get engine taken out - then a 5 min job!

Hi there Martyn,

I can't help with your problem but there are also some guys on the New Zealand Zed forum who may be able help you too! :) they may have some local knowledge and good garages to go to

Hi, I am on local forum, just purchased engine from our local Ebay type site for GBP300 so will do engine swap - at least I will have plenty of spares!

Cheers, Martyn
