I am new to 350ZX and currently own a 2.2VTEC Honda Prelude which is a lot of fun but I am thinking of upgrading when I soon turn 25. I love the idea of a twin turbo engine and the power it must produce, I love the styling and the interior looks a lot more interesting than any modern BMW or Merc. I have many questions about buying the right 350ZX that hopefully you kind people can help me out with. Cheers.

1. Briefly, what are the different specs, models available. My brief research so far has led me to the 3.0L twin turbo and 3.0L non-turbo but is there such thing as a 4.5L TT or is it urban myth?

2. How does the Fairlady marque differ from the std or other marques?

3. what options packages are available? I have noticed that there a few examples on ebay with leather, is this very common? Are there any optional electrical packages on some and not others?

4. are all 350ZX imports? If not, do JDM and UKDM specs differ in any way?

5. over what period were 350ZX’s produced? Is it best to go for the newest/lowest milage example possible?

6. when are the major services due (belt’s etc)?

7. What are the common problems that occur on 350ZX when they reach this length of life?

8. I have noticed on ebay and Autotrader that most examples are automatics. I would prefer a manual. How rare are they and do they cost much more than autos?

9. do they have LSD’s?

10. Are they all convertible or the T-bar thing?

Hi, I'll try and answer a few of these for you.

1. 4.5L TT is an engine transplant from a car that is not available here, but 2 people are in the process of fitting these lumps, but without turbos (no lag ;) )

2. Fairlady is the japanese name for 300zx... identical car.

3. As far as i know, when you walked into the showroom in 1990 and handed over your £35,000 you got to choose paint colour, auto/manual and leather or cloth. Everything else was standard equipment. Aircon, electric this, power that etc etc.

4. 350zx? you need to be clear what car your talking about here... i assume the Z32 300zx, not current model Z33 350z. Read #3.. all non turbo are jap, all slicktop are jap, all convertible are jap.

5. 1988-1996. Go for the newest, cleanest one you can find.

6. As for servicing, book says 60,000 miles i think? for the sake of a few hundred quid do it much sooner than that. A broken cambelt is game over. Oil change every 4,000 miles.

7. Suspension bushes, rust(UK), interior tired, tubs smoking... etc etc. just make sure you get a good one.

8. The manuals are out there, just wait and find one. I had to wait a while to find my 1990 UK manual.

9. TT's have an LSD for deffinate, makes for good drifting in the wet ;), not so sure about the N/A.. somebody help me? lol

10. There are 3 body types, and also LWB (4 seater) and SWB (2 seater). Targa=LWB+SWB, Slicktop=LWB+SWB, Convertible=SWB only i believe.

HTH Rob.

5. 1988-1996. Go for the newest, cleanest one you can find.

1989-2000

Last few were sold in 2001, although end of production was aug 2000.

Jees........... that's quite late isnt it?? an X reg Zed? cool

Slicktop=LWB+SWB no only swb only. jap cars get folding mirrors and a stop light in the rear spoiler.rear side markers and diffrent front light set up sidelights etc.A lot of imports tend to have aftermarket tuning parts fitted in japan exhaust /ecu/airfilter etc.

Message for tpv01:

If you're interested in reading about the history of Z cars from the original Datsun SPL212 Fairlady in 1960 to the latest Nissan 350Z currently being manufactured then I can recommend a book by Brian long titled "Nissan 300ZX, 350Z The Z-car Story" by Veloce publishers (http://www.veloce.co.uk). It's a good read and covers in detail the questions you're asking and includes good pics too. I got my copy from Amazon.
