Hi peeps,

I have defi gauages so I can monitor my boost safely as it records my peak etc.

I have noticed that if the engine is cool, it is a cool day or the car hasnt been used for a couple of hours I get 0.7 bar boost.

If I have used the car for a few miles, turn the engine off for a bit and then turn it on again, I now get 0.5 bar boost.

Also, If it is a warm day or the engine is hot I get 0.5 bar boost. It will stay at 0.5 boost until Ive turned the engine off and let it cool down for a couple of hours!

All temperature readings seem normal.

The car is pretty much standard. It has stock air filters. Could this be the problem? Is there a problem or is this behaviour normal?

Welcome to turbo car ownership.........! :)

This is entirely normal and can be improved if you lower charge temperatures with an intercooler upgrade or cryo spray but...........You will then still have the cool morning effect anyways but just able to see a bit more boost a bit more often.

If the car senses detonation it will put the car into safety boost, expecially if not using high octane fuel (optimax98/tesco99), and the weather is very hot.

But if the car is running right, on High octane fuel, on stock boost in our climate it should'nt happen even with 30+ centigrade heat...if it is then you could be running lean or the ECU is going into safety mode for another reason.

Wow i definitely see more boost on cold mornings and less on very hot days. Car is noticeably more sluggish.

I know the stock guage is pants but safety boost is like less than half of stck boost right?

I have recently had a £500 sevice and am running fully synthetic oil and Platinum plugs!

Also, I always use BP Ultimate!

I also thought safety boost was around 0.3 bar?

All I can know is cold air is denser than warm therefore contains more oxygen = better combustion. I dont know where the boost pressure is taken from or for sure if denser cold air would give you the just short of 3psi pressure differential you are describing but I suspect it might.

This morning it was reasonably cool and I was still running 0.5 bar! It seems to be running 0.5 bar more often but I do still get 0.7 bar quite often!

What should I do?

Hi guys

I got the error code '34' which by the looks of it means 'detonation sensor circuit'.

What do I need to do now?

Fix the det sensor or cabling - you'll be in safety boost most of the time.

Yes I am in safety boost most of the time!

How much does it cost to get det sensor fixed/replaced? Who in the London area can do it for me?

If you look at znuts posts for a dett bypass thread (top of the list) I posted a copy of how to do the bypass. Its the best thing to do as to replace the sensor you need to take the top off the engine which is a nightmare. Plus its easy to stick the resistor in there.

Would it be worth giving the sensor a clean first before attempting anything drastic?

In another thread it states that it can cost as much as £600 to replace sensor. Is this correct?

Yep, because the sensor is in the v of the engine so it all has to come off. Basically unless you are removing everything for another reason then it isn't worth replacing the sensor. You can't clean it as you can't get to it. You could try cleaning the connector and checking the wires, the sensor dieing is a common problem at this age though.

Sorry for distorting the thread but Retro, is your car lowered on standard wheels, if so how much and on what springs? It looks really well in your signature and I would like to keep standard wheels myself but am tiring of the totally standard look. Ta

I believe it has been lowered mate but dont know by how much as it was done before i got it, it is too low for ats trolley jacks to go under and i have to lift the body by the wing to get them under.
