What price range are you looking at mate? The best place is usually the for sale ads on here as you know the history then. I'd recommend getting one that has already had all the usual areas upgraded as otherwise it will cost money yourself to have them done. There are lots of posts with advice on here for new buyers. Let us know what you are looking for and you'll be pointed in the right direction. Dave

if I was starting all over again, I'd get along to a local meet to have a look around a few, and hopefully get an idea of what problems to look for... then I'd be really cheeky and try and get a ride in one - difficult to know how fast they should be if you've never been in one that's running right! (and you'd be surprised how many people buy cars running in safety bosst!!).

ย

Assuming you're an ok kind of guy, someone local to you would probably come and look at a car with you - good strategy to stop you just handing over the cash fo the first one you see if nothing else!!

ย

Spend as much as you can afford buying one, unless you're handy around cars yourself - servicing costs quickly add up, especially if there are faults needing correcting too. Unfortunately, you don't get your money back on mods, so try and buy one with the mods you intend on doing anyway - cheaper in the long run.

and finally, don't be put off by any horror stories you read on the forum - people who don't have problems don't post about it! I can honestly say I've had more problems (at least more expensive problems) with new merc than the zed!!

ย

good luck in the search, and don't forget the cars for sale on here - some cracking ones about!

In my experience you will kiss a lot of frogs :x: until you find a prince of a car !!!!

Or the other way round kiss a lot of dogs until you find a princess ???? oh this analogy does not work so well. :headvswal

Anyway save yourself a lot of time and buy a car with lots of history. If a Z of this age has been properly looked after you should see a fist full of receipts and lots of oil changes and service evidence. Knowing what I know now i would start looking on this forum first then go see one from an autotrader trade ad to have a laugh and see what the bottom of the food chain looks like. Then you pays yer money and takes your choice. Go for enthusiast owners first and foremost.

thanks guys for your help so far, i am looking to spend about ยฃ4-5000 at tops on a nice one. i'll be looking about on here often just to find out what is what in these cars. hopefully i'll soon get a rough idea of the ups and downs of these cars :D

I'm looking for a little more for mine as its had a lot of money put into it but you should find a good one for that price mate, with plenty of renewed or uprated bits. Look for one thats had all the items that wear out replaced.

what are the most common areas of wear on these cars?

Seriously, have a good read through the BUYERS GUIDE and youll be sorted.

ย

Also, if your looking at a non-members car, i'm sure a local member to the car will go along with you if you need any advice, as I have done with a few members.

ย

Good luck in your search!
