Hi,

Right, had my passenger back wheel off to today to investigate a scratching sound that gets rather loud the longer im driving (presumably as its gets hotter) when i brake, but then stays on for while after too, then goes off - then back on again when i brake - but the longer i drive the worse it gets and seems to stay on permanently. - hope that makes sense!

Nothing i can spot instantly with the wheel off, wheel moves a bit but not that much to suggest the bearings. What i did notice, when it was on the jack with the wheel off, first i was in park hand brake on, and the pad was stuck on the disc, hmm i thought, so i took it out of park into 2nd handbrake off - pad didn't move, into neutral handbrake off, pad still stuck on the disc, is this right?

Wheel back on - went for another drive, sound had gone even when i brake..until 10mins of driving round later, noise comes back (as above), and the longer im driving the louder its gets again. so what im thinking is maybe the pad is stuck to the disc..when its cold its not too bad, when it gets hot after much braking/driving - it expands more and makes this screeching noise..

Also , unless its in my head, the car doesnt seem to pick up as quickly when i put my foot down, only very slightly, but im sure its there - which would suggest that the pad's sticking again??

Any ideas? im a bit lost really...oh i noticed if i pull the steering wheel very sharply to the left while i was driving (only about 20-30mph) the sound suddenly stops - then carries on!!! :headvswal

thanks for any replies..

Ed

Sticky calipers? need a reseal kit.

hmm maybe - sorry , what a reseal kit?

It reseals the pistons in the caliper. Pretty cheap kit, you can get it from the traders on here (its a standard nissan kit I think). Try a search as I think I've seen pictures of people doing it.

thanks for the info mate - done a search but i cant find anything on what to do with it or where to buy it..

just want to come back to my question about whether the pads should be engaged with the pads with the car in gear and the handbrake off?

any ideas?

thanks

Dude the pads have nothing to do with the handbrake!-and yes the pads should be on the disc just enough to feel resistance to turning-any more and the piston(s) is seizing! :)

ok - so the wheel does turn and there is a bit of resistance, or is it a lot of resistance..hmm..felt quite tight but it does turn..

so if its turning ok and its not the pistons seizing - is that a different problem to the calipers that might need re-sealing?

thanks again chaps, your knowledge is really appreciated.

See if the pistons push back in the caliper easily,if they do that's not your problem!-then whilst the pads are back, try turning the wheel,if it 's still tight the problem is with the handbrake shoes inside the disc! ;)

thanks for all of your replaies - found out what the problem was..it was the brake low metal indicator bits on the front brake pad, although the brakes almost new, they stuck down to the disc, ive just bent them bak for now and the noise has gone.
