Hi guys,

I've just installed 2 Belkin Wi-Fi network cards in uptairs and downstairs pc's and for the life of me I cannot get them to see eachother. I want a direct connection without using a router. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong??

Cheers

need to make sure they are set for "ad-hoc" mode in the wireless properties.

Also, you're best to assign them each static IP addresses (eg: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2) using the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0). As above, set them both to ad-hoc mode and you should be able to communicate between them ok

do you have firewall software on each pc? if so you will need to allow access (usually in zone configuration)

Cheers guys. Firewalls are turned off. How do I set to ad-hocs and give them static ip's?

You should find that the configuration can be carried out easier from the Belkin utility (normally in the system tray by the clock). Otherwise go to Network Connections, right click then Properties on the Wireless connection. You should be able to change all the settings from here. TCP/IP properties for the IP address and subnet mask and Configure for the adapter settings.

I had the same problem and the above it right, you need to assign it a static address.

You should be able to type in its address and connect direct and alter it

In theory the Microsoft automatic adressing scheme (can't remember the range) may work - eventually ....

169.254......I think...

Cheers everyone. I kept Steve (Cybernet) on the phone for an hour or so and kinda got it working. Looks like I have a range problem :( Can I increase the range anyway?

Cheers again,

Vijay

do you mean 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.127?

;-)

No. That is the private addressing scheme. If the card cannot get an IP address, there is a separate addressing scheme that XP will give the card, I think it is called the alternate address and I am sure it is like 192.254 or very similar..... :xxx:

You may just be able to add a desktop antenna to your existing PCI card. However, the most reliable way of sorting a range problem is an access point positioned in between the two nodes :(

PS. Check the specs on the above for compatibility. I'm not 100% sure what equipment you've currently got :smash:
