Has anyone fitter one of these in their Zed? I reckon it would be well worthwhile. I've got one in the rx7 (seem to be standard upgrade for rx7 people to sort fueling ,etc). I absolutely swear by it. Its got everything on screen: intake air temp, coolant temp, inj duty, knock sensor, speed, the lot.

IMO its much better than having millions of dials and screens everywhere blocking your view. In particular the a pillar pod which I find annoying. If you consider you spend £130 on a greddy/defi gauge times four (egi temp, boost, air temp, water temp) plus fitting and extra sensors it is just as much as the £500 odd squids for the apexi FC and a setup session.

a mate has just fitted one of these to his skyline, with the optional boost module.

your looking at £500 just for the unit. set-up is usually the same again, so buget for about £1000 all in.

Not a bad ECU, i had it in my skyline and couldnt fault it

Unfortunatly they never made one for the zed, you could make a skyline one fit it but i looked into it and it was not worth it

Good peice of kit for the money

Mike

I have looked at Thor Racing's website and they do the Apexi Power FC and commander unit for £675 + fitting. The mapping session is an extra £412, so you are looking at about £1087.

There are two versions, one that uses your MAF, so you will only ever get a max 400bhp, or another version which doesnt use the MAF, where there is no bhp limit.

??? yes there are 2 types a normal one and a Jetro version which uses a MAP sensor but the normal one can go upto any level of power ;) yes your limited to how much air a MAF will flow but on a skyline for example you can run nismo MAFs which will flow 6-700 bhp no problems and the Z32 MAF can flow 450 bhp each hence why they put them on skylines as they can flow upto 900 bhp with supporting mods obviously :)

and as i said in my other post here you cant get one for the 300zx but yeh around £1000 supplied and mapped is about right

Mike

Hmmm,

dilemna time. I want to up my boost now the running gear is sorted and know my motor is sound. I was just considering a high end boost controller with John Dixon  sorting my chippage out...........

But........... I was also gonna get some guages to keep a real eye on things like temp, oil etc. When you laid out the economics AND the ergonomics like you did you got me thinking.

Is there anyone on the forum that can program these and has lots of Z application knowledge?

I have seen lots in skylines but also hear the argument that its better just to get a chip by a 'good guy' who knows what he is doing rather than some of the dubious mapping by some rolling road jockeys with little Z experience.

What say the forum?

if apexi dont do a specific unit for the 300 then leave it alone would be my advice..

thor did my power fc in my skyline and did a cracking job...

my cars running about 14psi and has been chipped (properly) and the boost upped using jets i believe... my car goes well (very well some say) and touch wood no problems yet.. i THINK the chipping and boost jets was done at ZWorld or ZTech, will confirm if required tho as i have receipts at home for all the work done..

the power FC is very good, but only if you plan more mods and have the knowledge to alter and tweek the settings yourself, or the money to pay someone to do it..

i had a Z32 AFM on my skyline, running 405bhp and it was running at 65% capacity max..

all the best..

Tony

It is possible to make it fit, in fact it will just bolt up

but

the skyline one doesnt need to control as much as the zed ecu so some of the functions wont work and you need a dual MAF setup for it to work as well which is not too hard to setup but once you have bought another MAF and filter and wiring, spent £1000+ on the item and mapping you might as well go for an ECU thats been designed for the Zed like the AEM :)

Mike

I thought the Apexi FC would fit too, it is just hard to get the wire fitting adapters. However, if someone has a circuit diagram anything could be made to fit.

However, my problem is deciding on whether to get a mappable ECU like the Apexi or just one of those plug in chips. The ECU is the brain of the car and shouldnt be overlooked!

there is no "fitting adapter" they fit directly to the oem ecu plug which it will do but as i said it will work with a few little alterations but it wont control several of the zeds functions so not worth it.

Trust me i am always banging on about the importance of getting decent engine management ;) yeh if you have a filter and looking to run a few extra PSI then an off the shelf chip is fine but start running bigger injectors, turbos etc then a custom chip just doesn not cut it!!

Mike

I've got a PFC opn my gT$ top piece of kit, i never did understand why thy didnt make them for the 300. criminal IMO

I got an r32 power fc ..if i rewire my zed to match the r32 wiring and run dual Maf is it possible the power fc might work ??

yes you can rewire it and it will work but the zed's ecu controls more like the VTC etc and the R32 does not have that and to be honest once you cost in the extra maf, the cost of the ecu and then the mapping etc you may as well go for a ecu designed for a zed ;)

You could fit an emerald ECU and run MAP based load sites for less than that, ECU is ~550+VAT then need a new trigger wheel in the CAS and adapt the existing wiring loom.

apexi power fc, for winners!! ; )

yes and no

in fact the power fc is a pretty cheap ecu, yes its stand alone but its not a very fast and comprehensive ecu. Dont get me wrong i had one on my skyline and it worked very well but i also know my mapper fitted one onto a car but to show the difference between the apexi and a gems he copied the map across to the gems that he had just done on the apexi and ran the car on the rollers and it ran better and made just over 30 bhp more ;)

it is a shame they never made a proper one for the 300zx

Mike

I would consider putting one on a car if I was having lots of other engine work done at the time but I can't see much benefit in just putting one on?

I guess if there car's already modded it can help make the best of those parts?

whats a gems ecu ....i live in the caribean so access to most of thes stuff is either limited or really expensive....

Right now i am running a tommy kaira ecu

the gems is a competition ecu that was made for the likes of the subaru rally teams etc but has also been used in many other ecus like the one i run is the AEM which is developed for the 300zx.

as i have said before you can fit an apexi but its not a straight bolt on as some of the wiring is different on the skyline one, from memory theres 3 wires which need changing over and about 4 systems which the skyline version will not run as they dont have them on a skyline!! i think border in japan made some power fc's to fit the 300zx so i presume thats one of them in that mag feature?

you can buy the aem direct from the USA so shouldnt be too much of an issue, not sure how you would get on with the mapping?? i know theres a big power supra drag car over there running the aem so may be worth looking into to find out who mapped it?

Mike

my new 200sx is getting power fc fitted this week with 555 injectors and a gt28rs and all supporting mods, looking to get around 370bhp which would be pretty respectable out of a 1.8 turbo!

I think thats the supra down the road from me at RSE Motorsports.

1000bhp drag car and hes using AEM.

well i know rc developments use to use the d jetro power fc in their 7-800bhp evo and had no probs , I got the d jetro too in my evo and is the shiznick !! cost me £500 imported and paid a good tuner £100 to map it for me !! took 3 hrs on real roads

what about eprom tuning my stock ecu anyone had good results with this??

Yep the stock ECU is very good at its job. Has better resolution fuel and timing maps than most aftermarket ecus too - 16x16 as opposed to 8x8. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the stock ecu - you can even map it real time using the zemulator from http://www.ashspecz.com ;)

so i called up apexi usa today to find out if i can modify the RB25DET VCT Power FC to fit the VG30DETT ... The guy there said i could BUT i don't need to as apexi usa offers a Power FC for the VG30DETT which he explained is baisically a RB25DET VCT FC thats modded internally to Plug ad Play into the VG30DETT ..i guess the mods done to it also take into consideration the VG MAF and fuel and all the other gizmos that the Z comes with ...
