Changed the spark plugs today and found no.1 spark plug covered in oil, fresh oil.

Looked down and the piston was dry.

Put new spark plug in and ran the engine.

Took the spark plug out and the whole lot including piston was covered in fresh oil.

Where the fook is that coming from???

Bearing in mind i've had the head gasket done and new pcv valves??

Featured Replies

did you find where all that oil was coming from a few weeks ago?

how's it running?

Am no expert with the deep internals, but i'd say piston rings worn, maybe a techie could be more precise.

Yea mal, found the leak, a breather hose to PCV valve had come off.

Had a compression test done before head gasket was done and that was ok. and the bores where ok. So oil couldnt have come from there. Unless it just wore that much in the last 1000miles.

Im wondering if a valve guide seal could be fooked or summint???

Smokes on tick over, did today, and also when coming off boost.

Had turbos checked when engine was out and told they were ok and not worth the money to overhaul.

hmmmmm just odd that its filling with fresh oil and the only thing thats not been done/checked, eventhough it probably should of been when the heads where off, is the valve seals.

Doesnt smoke all the time on tick over.

But theres def oil coming in and getting burnt off in that no.1 cylinder.

id be more inclined to say rings, valve stems are normally shown up when car is cold,if smoke clears once warm and does not reapear then you can almost say valve stem oil seals,if its on boost, off boost its more likely to be turbos/rings a compression test may not show up a worn ring

It puffs when you change gear and come off boost. but only when boosting hard. not under normal driving.

It does it when you stop at lights sometimes.

It did it really bad once when i really booted it in first then stopped straight after. It smoked for about 30seconds.

Its gotta be rings or valves cause theres no other way oil can get in a piston chamber is there?

  • Author

Not that I really noticed.

But my dipstick never seems to give a good reading anyway.

Like today I totally drained the sump, wipped dipstick, checked level and said it was full, lmao?!?!?!?

Just ran engine again and lots of smoke out one exhaust, same side as dodgy cylinder. Took plug out, still oil on piston, but burning off slowly.

Yes mate it is. Been down that path though.

But the piston was dry after I had topped the oil up, then only after I ran the engine was there oil in there.

Ill have to take it out for a drive and try dry that piston out and see if it fills up again.

A compression test will show worn rings if performed correctly, i.e. carried out dry, and then carried out wet. If the rings are faulty the difference between to two tests per cylinder will be obvious.

sounds like valve stem seals to me, vacume in manifold is suckin g oil in at tickover and on overrun when vacume in manifold is highest, had s beemer which did exact same as this, take it up to about 120 and lift off throttle and it would lay down a smoke screen 007 would have been proud of otherwise it would smoke slightly when cold and give slight smoke on g/changes and overrun when driven gently.

Went out for a drive and no.1 cylinder burnt off all the oil and was dry.

Did a dry compression test on the front 4 cylinders, couldnt be arsed to do that back ones.

Not sure if I managed to get the tester tight enough as the metal shaft wasnt long enough, so had to do it up by twisting the rubber hose.

Anyway, all the front 4 showed 135psi, which is a bit low isnt it?

But atleast they are all consistant so maybe the rings are ok.

Didnt do it wet, guess you need some thick oil?

BTW, i didnt have the throttle pushed all the way, doh!!!!

Only just read that, would that affect it?
