Guys,

Going to the ring in september. Anyone got any real world advice of their Z at the ring (I have rehearsed on Gran Turismo)

Most worried about frying brakes and tyres :(

You're all slow! Wozza didn't even see me pass him

I went round in my Z in 8.5 mins... :D

Just waiting for the replies now ;)

Was an awesome experience that I just have to do again as soon as money allows.

THAT was you bud ....  dam that was fast ....

Oh pretty much about everything.

But the main upgrade was the driver as Chris was brave enough to give the keys to our adopted super grandad. Now this guy is one serious driver.

8.5 - what mods have you done especially brakes?

Chris

There's a list of mods a mile long on my spec sheet in the rides section:

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/vbgarage.php?do=view&id=28

Brakes are the skyline R33 GTR setup but they were gone after about 4 corners! LOL

Never ever faded on me on the road

As Chris said, it wasn't me driving though.

We met a 70 year old ex world champion driver from Oz and I was mad enough to let him take me round for a lap.

Never been so scared in my life and i'm not usually a bad passenger

Takes a lot to get a wide arch Z with monster tyres sliding but he did on every corner without brakes

any vids :) sounds awesome

any vids :) sounds awesome

Unfortunately not as we were having to share the camcorder and it was already out in someone elses car and getting close to the end of the track time so we had to go out without it :(

Never knew how high the limits of my car were until then, this guy was taking the correct racing line through every bend, mounting the run off kerbs on every apex LOL

Flat out over blind crests where I was sure there were bends coming up

We undertook a car through the carousel and overtook a bike on the way out of it

Overtook every car and bike going round and he said he was taking it easy as it wasn't his car LOL

Best bit was when he said he was having trouble with his shoes heel and toe-ing so he took em off and did most of the lap bare foot LOL

Brakes were on fire when we pulled up at the end.

Some memorable comments:

Half way round with me pinned into the seat:

Len: "This is a fast car"

Len: "Are you OK"

Me: "Terrified"

Len: "Why didn't you say?"

Me: "I'm letting you concentrate" and after getting my breath back: "There's no point getting a racing driver to take you out then asking him to slow down is there?"

Was truly awesome to see a proper driver make me look absolutley pants!

Went there thinking my driving skills were something like 8/10 but came back knowing I'm not even a 2/10

pmsl - quality

Doing the 'ring' (ooer missus) is one of the things you`ve got to do before you die(imho). I`ve done hundereds of laps on the XBOX (Forza Motorsport and PGR3) but I can`t imagine how awesome it must have been to go round with a proper racing driver at the helm. I also fancy a lap in the 'ring' taxi as well.

You can go round in the ring taxi M5 or there's a monster stripped out Dodge Viper that's got some silly power if you've got a bit of cash to burn and a strong stomach

lol the only problem is I`m not that good a passenger, do they not have a Skoda Octavia TD option?

LOL no you'll have to ask Kirbz in his Golf diesel

He wasn't far behind us all the way there, round the track and home!

There's nothing can prepare you for the speed of the track, the tightness of some of the bends and the hills with blind crests where your brain is telling you to brake but you know you should be trying harder.

Driving onto the track my heart was pounding thinking I might be about to die LOL

Coming off at the end I felt like I'd been on the worlds scariest rollercoaster x10 :D

Has to be the ultimate buzz!

And the fuel cost us about 50p each! :)

Watchin the vids of a fast lap it seems to me that memorising the circuit is the number one route to being fast. Although there seems to be some tricky bits it seems to drive like just a long fast road circuit. There is not as much changing surfaces as I had been lead to beleive. I guess the most ground can be made up on the blind crests which if you know the line can be taken flat out or if you don't not.........What was the peak speed with your wizard of OZ guy?

I never managed to look at the speedo LOL but can't have been much over 90mph most of the way as it's pretty twisty.

There's a couple of long straights where if you know they're coming you might get to 130 ish I reckon.

The final long straight up to the finish line was maybe 150 ish but not sure - it was all a blur!

Cool,

I scored a ring meister coach for the weekend we are going. She is a development driver for prodrive and their resident ringmeister. I met her at a pro-drive trackday and she made me a lot faster and helped me drop my bad habits from my karting days :headvswal .

Anyway as luck would have it she is working for Alfa :x: that weekend on a new model. I have agreed a fee and she will coach me for my 6 laps :)

Of course I have now set myself up for posting my times so unless it is a cool time I will opt for no publicity right now!

Chris
