Rad Gunk

Hi All,

Had a look at a Z I am thinking of buying and it had a little rust coloured spoof type stuff in the otherwise Normal green water, it had a slightly greasy consistency to it. Anything to worry about or just normal gunk ?? Engine oil had just been changed and rad cap was clear also not smoking from exhaust! Any ideas appreciated?

My Vauxhall calibra turbo had the same symptons. It turned out that oil was getting into the cooling system through a pourus cylinder head and was told that this was quite common on the calibra/cavalier head and had to have it sent to vauxhall for lining inside.

Head gasket could have blown or maybe the head needs skimming.

Just a couple of ideas.

Cheers Teejay

Mark,

From what you say it didn't sound too bad to me. Are you talking about a film of oil on the water, which is quite common and probably nothing to worry about, or more than that ?

While were on the subject of gunk!

I've noticed some white powdery stuff as soon as yu take the rad cap off. Whats this??

Hi Mate,

It was just a few bits of rust coloured goo type sludge floating on the water near the rad cap, less than a quarter of a teaspoon.

Cheers,

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless there is oil in there. Just get it flushed through if you buy it and get nice new clean stuff in there.

might also be something like Bars Leaks a leak stop compound. Handy for stopping small seepages from pipe joints etc. Sure I saw something similar in mine when I bought it 15 months ago and its still the same.

Apparently can help lube the water pump too.

Doesnt sound too bad mark. The problems i had, had alot more gunk than quarter of a teaspoon

Soz George, just at this time of night all thoughts of sensible answers go up in smoke.

Quite literally wink.gif

For what its worth the white powder is prolly just calcium build up - this is a guess coz I feel guilty for the stupid reply, but I get whitish powdery build up in my toilet and that has water in it.

Glen..

More likley the aluminium rad corroding, I would have thought. Could be due to the hard water as well though. However, if it is the water and this is building up a bit then I would expect a) it to be hard, not powder and b) there to be a water leak !
