well, not quite home made

ive got a friend who works in a well known engineering factory (i wont say which one) and he recons if he ahd one to copy, he can get the metal and make me a set of forged pistons

what do you guys think, im not too sure if he could, but as he said they have to be machined somewhere, so why couldnt he machine them

he makes parts for oil pumps and aircrafts

also thinking about getting my wheel spacers for my wide arch kit made by him aswell, so if anyone has one lying about to lend me so he can copy it send me a pm :)

Anything can be done if you have the right machinery to do it all.

My mate made some caliper pistons once, they worked.

He must be doing high grade stuff if he's making it for aircraft?

yeah its high grade stuff

actually its two friends that ive got that work in engineering shops, one does the high grade stuff the other makes machine parts

so ikm sure one of them will be able to do it

he is making me a fancy gear knob first though

I can make you up a battery from some old fishing weights and a tupperware box if you want.

Call it a round £20.

would it be rr?

Could it be Goodrich? Very similar job to me by the sounds of things

As your friend may know the material is critical. There are so many grades available thus the potential for many opperating conditions. Performance piston specialists invest huge amounts of cash into research and development to attain to the correct blend of alloys, not commonly shared with joe pubic. They are finely tuned to the correct specification to withstand extream turbo temeratures and high wear. Also, a bar of forged alloy wont posses the stuctual properties of individual forged pistons. I Wont go into detail but metal is formed by many different grains, their direction and composition determine the strength. Individual forgings will be much stronger than a bar of forged alloy cut up to make all six pistons.

If he's unsure about the spec you could end up with a big molten lump of poo in your engine, which isnt nice!!

As far as machining them, no problem if they do stuff for the aviation industry.

I had the capability to make my own but chose to go for decent aftermarket ones, not worth the risk IMHO. Just some wise words from a research and development engineer ;)

cheers for that bud, maybe i will wait and see what he can come up with

At my workplace we have two Yamamichi Mazak 5 axis lathes that i would love to have a go on. But alas they are on 24\7 making titanium parts for aerospace and militery customers. The amount of leccy these things need is huge lol.
