Not bad considering this is the most mechanics I've ever done :p

Oh and thanks to turb0z for the advice.

All day to get the rad out? :)

Are you doing everything then? the cam belt and all? I like seeing people getting stuck in.

  • Author

yes and yes, I started at like 6 though and stopped for advice and dinner so not quite all day, long enough though lol :p

Oh yeah and I almost forgot, I dunno what people are on about with crumbly top rad hose mounts, mine was solid as the day it came out of the factory.

Also I found the boost leak, the passenger side intercooler hose wasn't clamped at all  , good vac. but it did make a faint howling under boost.

DIY 60K kit? I was a bit worried when i saw the thread title, I hope your not gonna use an innertube for your cambelt, bostick for your cam seals, blender instead of water pump etc..... ;)

  • Author

You blind, doesn't say kit anywhere lol.

And what do you mean, an innertube aint going to cut it?

lmao at coldeyes! wouldn't speak to soon. I'm sure there've been a few people who have took there engines apart and found that the last person had done that!

Clarkey - The trick isn't getting it apart mate, thats quite easy (if all else fails use a big mallet and a big iron bar). The trick is finding somewhere to put all the bits back again! Especially all the extra useless clamps and brackets that nissan put on there! :)

good luck with it - did mine last weekend and found it surprisingly straightforward (once I'd got everything straight in my head!!). A few tips:

you really need 1/2 or 3/8 hex head socket to get the water pipes off - possible with long reach allen key, but mine snapped!

make sure you understand the belt-wrapping... you'll be amazed at how violently driver side rotates when you relieve tension!!

get a second pair of hands when aligning the new cambelt (i didn't and it took me much longer than it should of!!)

don't panic when you rotate the crank and the belt marks are all out... they will line up again, but it takes a while! (For belt and braces, you can count the teeth - details in manual)

Good Luck!!

Belt tensioner has facility to lock off using a 10mm bolt, this way the pressure is slowly released and then locked off, removal of the belt is done by undoing the tensioner pulley and the belts slips off with no tension on it, all of this of course is done with the belt already timed up.

Well done Clarkey mate, it took me untill day two to have my rad out when I did mine :D But then I also took the front bumper off first (as i was changing it)

Only advice I'd give would be to read as much as you can, oh yeah, and make sure you've got a 27mm socket for the crank pully.

All the best mate :duffer:

Progress made today..

I gave up when I saw the set-back bolts on the water hoses. Somewhat later on I remembered that there were some long allen keys in the toolbox, so i went ot have a look and sure enough there was a 6mm one, just the ticket. Got the allen bolt out of the bottom hose, turned round to the toolbox, and just as i had finished attaching the 12mm socket onto the ratchet extension, the bulb in my lamp blew! Managed to get the 12mm nuts off in the darkness but the pipe aint gonna budge. I'll have a look tomorrow when I get a new bulb.

Good luck clarkey, give us a shout if you need owt.

went out and got the tools I needed today and made some more progress.

Now how the fook do I slacken off the PAS belt? Is it just a case of turning that impossible-to-get-at bolt which can only be done with a spanner because the ratchet wont fit?

I use a ratchet spanner mate, keep at it,your doing good! :)

  • Author

Regular spanners only in my toolbox, guess i'll be swearing at it a lot more then :p Do I need to loosen the bolts on the front of the bracket btw?

Loosen em' all mate, especially the one that slides in the bracket! :)

I bet mine is even older :D (I'll post a pick sometime)

Nice one Clarkey mate, nice to see it's coming back together.

Well done Clarkey. Its amazing how long it can take the first time you do it when your not an experienced mechanic, and it can be quite daunting.

It took myself and greg 3 days to do mine the first time .....now its just a few hours!

Only taken me 2 months because I didn't have the parts I needed, that and a lack of motivation.

I'm doing another one directly after, his needs to be done in a day, easy ;)

Oh and that top water pipe is a son of a bitch to get back on eh! I lost my rag with it, had to clamp those stupid hose clips open while pushing it on, clearly pushing wasnt going to do it so ended up using the trusty old mallet to pound the heck out of it, but while doing that the damned clamps kept flying off.

No stat or ATF cooler today :( I guess tomorrow is final assembly day instead then. Its looking a lot more like an engine bay again now, top hose, ptu and wiring in place.

Is it normal for new belts to be a lot tighter than the old ones? I slackened the adjusters a lot to get the old ones off, they were very loose tbh. But putting the new ones on was a lot tighter than I expected, and they seem to have good tension without touching the adjustment, in fact the fan belt seems too tight, going to loosen it in a bit. Probably do it tomorrow though, going to the pub instead, I need it after all that :p

Oh yeah and another question, routing the pipes for an external ATF cooler, how do you get them past the a/c condensor into the front? I can't seem to find a way through, and passing them under the crossmember doesn't seem like a brilliant idea.

They do go round the side bud, just make sure to insulate them against chafing!

.

fit both clips on each hose towards the back rub a small amount of wd40 around rim of hoses and push and done less than 1min,then the microwave would of gone ping and a rustlers bbq rib roll is ready :D
