The belt which runs from the water pump pulley to crankshaft pulley to alternator has burst. How big a job is this to replace .

 

Anyone got any idea of time and cost etc?

Engine out is probably a bit of overkill, £20 labour charge would sound about right.

I had a look and thought the area seemed almost inaccesible - have you done the job yourself ,or had it done or are you making an eductaed guess

I have done the job myself and it took about half an hour, jack the front of the car up and undo the tensioner on the alternator, undo the 4 10mm bolts on the fan and move the fan forwards, then fit belt adjust tension refit fan, check tension again job done.

yep , easy job. as above :) If you're desperate for space you could always take the rad off and do a coolant refresh while you're at it.
