Urgent central locking help... engineer here right now!

The clifford manual says that to do remote central locking on a 91 import zed you need to add a door motor to the drivers side. But it doesnt tell you where to do put it. Could anyone please give a description of how to attach the door motor or a picture? If you could that would be great.

Thanks,

Al

You just need to fix it in a suitable location behind the door, where it can be connected to the connecting rod between the external door lock and internal lock.

Compare the location with the doorcard, to make sure you can fit the card back on without problems.

So lets say I buy a zed (which I did). It doesn't have an alarm so I get one fitted. Since it doesn't have full central locking I can't simply connect the alarm to the controller. So I need a door motor.

1. Is there a certain type I need? The engineer says he can get a slimmer solenoid motor. Also is a '2 wire' solenoid a certain type of motor or the only type of motor?

2. Is there anything at all that I need? mounting brackets? Holes to drill?

These questions may seem a bit silly now as the engineer has gone and I said I'd try and find an exact way of doing it for him. He got the clifford instructions but they're really vague.

Get a new engineer mate, as this is a standard and easy job, if he needs you to tell him how to do it, then his work is going to be shit.

id have to agree with that!!!

yup, an alarm is only as good as the fitter mate, you are going to end up with an alarm that continually gives false alarms until the day some scum decides to nick the car when it wont go off at all, fitting this really is a basic job he should be able to do it with his eyes closed.

The alarm is fitted and works fine. When he went to connect it to the central locking he said that because the central locking doesn't work from the passenger door he'd have to add a solenoid motor to the drivers side. He took off the door card and (now remember I have no idea about this stuff) he said there was a problem because the locking mechanism is a cable or something. He wasn't sure if you had to attach the motor to the actual lock or the cable I think.

Now I'm sure that he could put it in he just wants to do it the definative 'correct' way. I have every confidence in him as an alarm fitter its just this little detail that needs to be correct. Thanks for your concerns about the quality of the engineer but could I politely steer the thread away from a 'get a new engineer' thread and back to a 'this is the best way to do it thread', as I'm sure he won't enjoy reading most of it so far and he seems like a nice person.

Thanks

Al.

Al no offence, but as said before, this is not a zed specific fitting issue, its an every day one fella, and if he doesnt know how to do it, then you have to ask why.

its basic fitting mate. and sorry, but i would be very reluctant to tell him how i did it as i fear your going to have problems, and a response along the lines of you said do it.

sorry

I'm not trying to prove you wrong and I do realise you're all looking out for me and I thank you for that but purely out of interest does anyone know what other cars would need the same method as the zed for connecting alarm to central locking? This is just me wondering now, nothing to do with the engineer.

I believe, certain vauxhall are the same, older ones not newer ones mind.

Alfo, all it needs is a small motor that extends an arm when used, this connected to the cables, pulls the lock to open, that simple, it can be fitted anywhere along the run of the cable provided it has sufficient reach to open and not foul the door card, mine is fitted more or less about elbow are when sitting in car, best i can describe really.

when you look at the door with no card, bottom right you will see a hole, at the top of the hole, you will see a cable runnig to the front, with the door closed and locked, pull the cable, and you will find it opens. just mount the unit to the upper metal work and your on a winner.

this is for guidence only and i take no responsibility for the fitting mate.

i would go take a picture, but its too fooking hot to take my door cards off

So his lack of knowlege on this subject could simply be that as yet he wouldn't have fitted an alarm on a car like this before.

What qualifications do you need to be an alarm fitter? Or is there some alarm fitting course? I'm just (again) wondering as it is strange that if it is so easy that he doesn't know how to do it. I mean I'm pretty sure that he IS a registered toad fitter and not just some guy masquarading as one.

Again Im not trying to say I'm right by sticking with him or anything I really am just wondering... I do wonder a lot.

To be a qualified alarm fitter, you will need to attentd tarinning courses, and have paperwork as such before your fitting is acknowledeged by insurers mate.

if he hasnt fitted a alarm using this method, then he simply is crap, as so many cars use it, and also cars with no central locking too mate.

I honestly can not express enough mate, how simple this is.

I know you think good of the guy, but if he was fitting MY alarm, i would pack him off without a thought.

anyway, here is an old pic i found with my door card off, you cant see the unit, but i have blobbed a red dot where it is fitted.

Before he fits it mate, ask to see his paperwork as a fitter and an auto electrician. it takes JUST ONE bad wire or joint, to make your car not only not alarmed, but potentially a fire hazzard mate

no way is he a registered toad fitter mate ;)

Is yours a 90 or 91? Mines a J91 so they should be the same right? I'll show him the thread and the pictures you posted. I don't wanna risk taking the card off myself for fear of not getting it back on again.

Thanks again.

91 jap import mine is mate

It had probably been fitted by someone else at an earlier time as ALL Z's need an additional Motor in the drivers door (just a normal one that pro engineers will use and fit on a daily basis).

Compared to some cars fitting a motor in the z door is easy.

paul.

Been in touch with GT alarms and they wanted me to call an 0906 number at 50p a min for support, I think not!

I dug out the recipt they give you from fitting and it has all the parts used listed - 2 wire lock actuator. Stuck the part number from the invoice into ebay, £4.50 jobs a good un!
