exhaust question

on my exhaust there is a center section that has these two parts , arrowed on the picture, are these cats or silencers? i dont know what they are. just wondering if they need to be there or if i can replace them with a straight through pipe?

    bearing in mind that exhaust isnt the one i have got, mine came on the car from japan, lmtd edition kakimoto racing system, has got the lmtd edition plates riveted to it and the serial numbers also on the silencer and main pipe section. the bits with the arrows pointing to them are similar to the ones on my pipe.
