Well, it seems like a few others here, I have been suffering from a 'bit' of wheel shake. I had it in the garage yesterday and gave them a list of things to check (HICAS arms, ball joints, tension rods, bushes, propshaft etc) and they went all over it and said that it was in fantastic condition. :) The only thing they could come up with (as a starter) is a 'harmonic balance weight' which is missing from the back of the gearbox. Looking at the back of the box (mine is a manual, not sure about an auto) there are 2 studs where this weight should be. If anyone can get me one or tell me how big/heavy this weight should be it will make me very happy as then, hopefully, it will sort my problem out and I'll enjoy driving my baby again. If you have one for sale that would be even better.

Cheers guys.

hi mate dont know about this weight, but my tt had a wheel shake when i got her ,and like you i had a garage look at all the usual things, and like yours they said everything was great, and couldnt find any problem, mine only disappeared when i took off my Tein coilovers, and went back to standard suspension,so gathered that the thing was lowered to much, know problems since and runs nice and smooth, nothing worse than a wheel wobble.

Cheers for the info but mine's still running on standard suspension????? There does look to be a fair bit of camber on the front though.

I've put some pics up on my thread in the 'wanted' section, if someone can have a look and tell me if I'm missing something I would be grateful.

i would have thought that is your problem,if the car is lowered to much it will cause to much camber,if yours has to much camber on standards then must be some ware in the suspension ,thus causing your prob, worth checking i would have thought

The weight on the gearbox wouldn't cause those symptoms, I removed mine ages ago and didn't notice any difference.

You sure it's wheel shake and not propshaft vibration ? If the prop centre bearing is failing then you may get vibration at certain speeds.

There is deffinately wheel shake and what I would consider quite a lot, it's not just a little bit of vibration. It has only really shown itself since I changed from 17s to 19s, there was some shake before but it seemed to only be when the car was cold???????!!!!!!! It is most noticable from about 55mph onwards, when I get to about 80 it becomes really uncomfortable. Please help, it's driving me mad. :headvswal

Bear in mind that tension rod bushes 'look' o.k. but the gel leaks out of em' and just leaves rubber bushes!-put poly's on mine and cured it, just an idea!

No mate, as far as I know the car is standard apart from the wheels. (chassis wise that is). They are brembo discs with standard TT calipers. They're not warped either as there's no pulsing through the pedal. :headvswal

It's hard to tell if there is shake all the time as I'm running rubber band tyres but definaterly from say 55mph on it is very noticable. At 70mph on the motorway this morning it was at the point where I didn't want to hold the steering wheel any more!!! It was oscillating about 5mm which is really uncomfortable and I'm sure it's gonna shake something off soon.

I had all the wheels re-balanced last week, no joy though.

Tie rod bushes, or worse tie rod breaking loose from it's rear fixing. Does it get worse under light breaking at speed? If it does, it's tie rod related.

Good luck

did wheels come with spigot rings and are they fitted had a few probs with cars not having spigot rings when they should, allows the wheel to run very slightly off centre giving quite bad steering shake. also check and see where wheel balance weights are they should be on inside edge and just behind spokes for a hidden balance, if there,s only wieghts in one place theyve more than likely done a static balance which wont stop wheel shake sometimes.

If your running 19's most get buckles before long, did you see them spinning in the balance machine.

Cheers for all the thoughts guys. Right, I bought the wheels new about 4 weeks ago, I had to use some 6mm spacers on the front to clear the calipers, as soon as the wheels went on I noticed the shake. Had them balanced again just to be sure and they were all out, the weights are on the inner edge of the wheel. Spigot rings were supplied and fitted. I also made sure that the spacers were centralised. I thought that one of the wheels might be buckled but the fact that they're new and been re-balanced I've kinda ruled that out, I saw them all being balanced but didn't study them that closely. Could one be buckled?

Nothing noticable under braking.

If anyone who would know from driving it lives close enough and wouldn't mind, I'm happy to meet up so you can drive it. Just put me out of my misery!!!!!! :(

Another way(and less accessible)is to balance wheels on the car,so hub etc is taken into account. It would deffo tell you if wheel related!

I've heard our cars have a knack of wheel nuts coming loose ? I always give mine an extra turn just to be safe.

Dont the wheels need to lock around the hub so they cant move side to side then the nuts to hold on tight. If spacers on maybe thats the problem, only guesses mind.

I dont think spacers will be a problem as the nuts would hold the wheel in place. I think spacers are a waste of time personally, they just help to line up the wheel on the hub.

I would personally check the wheel balancing first. Its the cheapest option to check first at only £5 per wheel at Quik Fit or alike.

I had a similar problem when I bough new disks for my NA a few years ago. They had to have 3mm spacers behind the disks - between the hub and the disk - to get the disks to clear the calipers. All was ok, but the original disks centred themselves by locating onto the hub. Because the new disks were now not touching the centering device on the hub they very easily ran out of true - giving the wheel wobble that you talk of.

If your wheels are not located centrally (in a similar manner to the disks I mention) then this would explain the wheel wobble. An easy way to check is jack-up the front wheels, take the car out of gear, place a tin can with a screwdriver on it on the floor and point the sharp end of the screwdriver at the lowest edge of the rim so that it's almost touching. Now turn the wheel slowly, and if it's not mounted centrally or if it's buckled, you'll notice it. It's relationship to the sharp end of the screwdriver should remain the same for a full revolution of the wheel.

And of course you need to check all 4 wheels in this way.

Good luck

Jack
