R12 connectors are a standard fitting. R134 adapters connect straight on. iv done it on mine.

Not on my 91 import, I spent a while checking it out, then I checked on two new cars and its quite different, the Halfords hose goes straight onto these, but won’t go near my Z.

I’ll find a local specialist on Thursday and return the Halfords kit!

£60 sounds about right, better than the £150 from Vehvac Limited

old R12 connectors are a threaded outer style fitting.

new cars would be R134a with larger speed couplings

Rung around this morning, not very successfully, and the only place that gave a full quote over the phone wanted £145 +VAT (£170), similar price to VEHVAC £150 +VAT, so I feel very enviously of those that have had it done for £30 and £60! Many just won’t/can’t touch it as its R12 as they don’t have the removal/storage facilities for it.

Spoke to the bloke at http://www.car-air-conditioning-supplies.com

He sells all of the bits, knows his stuff (and sells 100s, if not 1000s of A/C items), and said that I would need the following items. He said that if you have it vacuumed then it will be 100% efficient, if you do it this way it will be about 95% efficient. Do quote me on this, just relaying what he said.

AKCONRECKIT. R12 - R134A AIR CONDITIONIN... £59.99

Complete kit: Inc Special oil to prep the system for R134a, plus the connector adaptors, plus two cans of R134a gas.

AK2745. FJC Valve Core Tool Standard £4.29

Required to remove the value from the old connector, a normal tyre valve tool might do, but for £4 this will have any swearing!

Summary: *£64.28 **£64.28

Just ordered it, so should be with me tomorrow

Now got to take the Halfords kit back or could keep it for topping up.

David

you can buy Freeze-12 and R414B refill kits for approx. $60 on ebay, both work quite well.

Both are direct replacements for R12 (Freeze-12 is 100% compatible with R12 and can be mixed, but this is not recommended)

414B cools slightly better.

NB: you can also buy large containers of genuine R12 on ebay, but you may have slight legal/environmental problems getting it overhere :D

cool, can you let us know how you got on as mine needs to be changed.

Its amazing bad environmental items are banned here but the guys in the states carry on.

Why was my post del?

All I said was I used the halfords kit in my GF's Laguna that was empty and it worked a treat.

Just had a long chat with these guys who do the R12 to R134a ‘kit’ http://300zx.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=4520

, they are saying that ideally you should have the R12 professionally removed, (Its only an environmental issue, as the leak stop in the modern systems makes the seals swell to avoid leaks, and the old and new systems can coexist) the system pressure tested, new (current standard) connectors fitted and the new oil and gas fitted, plus optionally due to the age of the car a new Receiver Dryer.

Costs £150 to do the first bit plus £36 for a new Receiver Dryer, plus maybe (I didnt ask) VAT on top.

You can still buy their £30 kit, but according to the guy that I spoke to, their kit doesn’t contain adaptors to the Nissan A/C connector! Instead adaptors that would be used by an A/C engineer.

As with all things environmental it’s something you could take a view on, if we were all that green we wouldn’t be driving around in a 15MPG 3l twin turbo car, and removing all of the emissions system that came with the car.

Looks I’ll be ringing around the local A/C Re-Gas firms in Tunbridge Wells and Hastings if I can’t get an adaptor!

Have you fitted the conversion kit yet?

Need to do mine.

All,

Here's an interesting link with some info and pricing on aircon for pre 1991 cars... It also mentions EU regulations etc...

http://www.sandhurstmot.com/air_conditioning.htm

These guys were recommended to me by the RAC (I had another issue and took the opportunity to ask the RAC guy a few questions :-)

Marty.

Yes, the kit is fitted and working very nicely, I'm just in the process of writing it up for the FAQ.

To be trustful the word ‘kit’ over does it, it contains the following

2 x cans of R134a Gas

1 x can of oil and additives to ensure that the remnant of the old system and the new system and seals all work together

1 x Hose that connects from the cans to the car

2 x valve adaptors to convert the old R12 valves to the new R134a valves

The kit is very easy to use:

Remove the old valves

Fit the two new adaptors

Start the engine

Fill with the conversion can (oil + additives)

Fill with the two cans of R134a gas

Job done, took about 30-45 mins top

The only pain was that on my 91 import, I have to remove the battery to get to the valves, so I connected the battery via jump leads whilst re-gassing. Remember to put some tape around the temporary +12V connection!

David

Plus delivery and VAT, my total was £84 as I also bought a valve key (a tyre one would have done), so about £78ish all in
