Sometimes I get a really strong fuel smell from the car, sometimes on startup, sometimes after a run, sometimes after i have parked up and the car has been sat for a while. Have looked over the threads and done the obvious, tightening all the jubilee clips under the bonnet and its made no difference. Sometimes doesnt happen for days then it does. Any suggestions guys? I'm on the verge of just taking it in and having all the fuel pipes changed... :(

Daft as it sounds mate,not a bad plan!-if no obvious leaks,then the pipe can become porous.

Doesnt one of thje traders on here have a fuel pipe kit I seem to remember?

The kit still doesn't replace the most common leaky pipes but is well worth fitting all the same.

 

Check the tiny piece of pipe under the fuel regulator (small mushroom shaped thingy to the right of the engine cover at the back. This is the most common leak.

Then check the piece of pipe joining the fuel rails together, hidden under the throttle linkages at the front centre of the engine. Hard to get to if it's this though.

 

Try putting talc on all the pipe ends before you start it one morning and it will show you where the leaks are ;)

Have you tightened the pipes, clips under the throttle cover ?

make sure you disengauge the fuel pump first or you will have a rude awakening , it s af use under left side of car , underhood someone will post a link soon , "" if you wiggle the pipes they could come off , it happened to me , ,with me and karlos we thought we had taken fuse out

Or if you are just doing checks just open your fuel cap to let the pressure out and leave it for a few mins. It still squirts if you do have an accident but only a little so just keep a rag handy in case.

Ok cheers guys will double check but sure ive done em all... its so random, sometimes bad sometimes good for days on end?... will have to wait I'm off to silverstone for the weekend... WOOHOO!

I spent hours messing around tightening every connection including those on the fuel regulators, but still got the smell, all went away once I fitted Smithy’s kit, I guess that with the high fuel pressure, the old hoses were failing.

 

In Smithy’s kits you get the two major pipes and two shorter pipes, but three are required, two for the regulator connections and one for the intake to the fuel filter. Fortunately, one of the short pieces was just the right length to cut in half to use for one of the fuel regulator connection and the filter connection.
