Was driving home from work today, minding my own business, when I heard an almighty great bang from the back of the car which then threw itself sideways.

I managed to pull into a nearby car park, where I saw the rear offside tyre was flat, I took it off and was greeted by this:

Any ideas what could have caused this??

It hasnt been rubbing against anything, the tread is very good, the tyres are only 6 months old.

Out of interest, how old is the tyre? Theres a 3 digit number stamped into the tyre which indicates month and year of manufacture.

Looks like the tyre has perished around the sidewall.

Firstly, glad you and the car are ok

Do you wheel spin it much? is it the correct rating for the car? and I would be on to Avon about it, maybe they had a bad batch.

No mate never wheel spin it, its an auto for starters, it is zr rated was going to have a word when I've got a new one first things first, it handles crap with the space saver on lol

That could of been very nasty indeed, glad you and the car are both safe

If you've got a lowered rear end and haven't corrected the camber then a lot of extra weight is put on the inside edge of tyre. That coupled with it being under inflated would probably lead to what happened.

Si.

Scotty .. i had a similar thing happen on my old XJS when i tuned that .. was caused by the exhaust heat .. was to near the tyre .. ended up having to fit a heat deflector .. done 3 tyres b4 we sussed it .. cured it after that .. may not be the same prob but worth a look
