I bought a zx about 3 weeks ago. It is a 1990 G reg Jap TT. I have noticed a few noises that i wondered if anyone else knew what it would be?

There is a slight tappinf sound from the top of the engine sometimes, not always but if I turn it off and back on again it goes away for a bit. Any Ideas???

Also there is a rattle when i got over bumps etc sounds like bit of a clanking from underneat? any ideas on that one?

It also has a slight oil leak but other than this it is by far the best car i have had so far and its only got 65k on it.

Appreciate any comments / pointers offered.

Also what do you guys think to changing the recircs to bov's on these, any good or as standard as poss better?

tappin prolly lifters... try changing the oil see if that helps - do a search on oil and you'll get to see the masses and masses of different opinions about what's best!!

Rattling is possibly a loose cat heat shield - best to get under it and have a look though!

BOVs/ recircs... down to you! If you like the noise, then get BOVs, ither than that, the only reason you need them is to cure goosehonk (constant honking noise at certain rpm)... really down to individual preference.

thanks for the reply m8, i'll take thae on board.

Also the oil leak i got is dripping onto exhaust after giving it some welly and burining off. Very annoying - any1 any ideas on that one?

Know any good Z specialists Northampton way that i could take it to?

Oil leaks... welcome to zed ownership!!! If you can get it over a pit or ramps you may be able to spot where it's coming from (although it'll be more difficult than you think!!). Rear seal is a possible culprit, although it really could be coming from anywhere - and I mean anywhere as you'll be amazed at how far oil can travel when it's leaking... took me several weekends to find a leak on mine!!

good luck!

Rich

edit: not sure on garages around northampton... have a look in traders section and see if any are within travelling distance (definitely best to travel a bit further than take it somewhere local and end up not seeing it for months on end... which does happen!!)

I'm not far from you and I go the The Zen Garage's northern workshop near Skegness. They're excellent.

Zed World in Tamworth might be worth considering.

And Ryan / Greg's outfit might not be a million miles from you.

There might be a specialist in Coalville too???

The chances of you finding a good Zed place very nearby is not high! You generally have to travel a bit.

Try looking for sealant repairs to the rear cam seals, I've seen a couple of leaks there and it drips onto the exhaust. Sometimes people try to bodge repair it by covering the seal. Also the outside of the rocker cover but you probably wont see this with the manifold on. The inside of the rocker cover would drain into the V of the engine and down through the gearbox bell housing.

Thanks for comments guys, taken on board

If the rattle sounds like its coming from behind the cam covers , it could be the VVT springs that have weakened , mine sometimes rattles but mainly on tickover , as soon as you pick the revs up a bit it goes.

Supposed to be very easy to change HTH :D

Re: Goosehonk. Always wondered what that noise was!! What causes it and how do you get rid of it????

Clogged AIVs.....drill holes in the bottoms to vent.

Clogged AIVs is normally a gurgling sound from the bottom of the wings, goosehonk is a result of an aftermarket induction and dump/recirc valves

Sorry to be dense but what is an AIV? Only had my 300 for a year and never had much trouble until recently. Also can the radiator on the cars be repaired as mine is leaking (BADLY). Cheers.

Rads can be repaired but IMO its best to get new, and Koyo or Howe if you can afford it, the AIVs are small plastic things in the inner wings connected to the cats.

Cheers m8. Love the car! Mines red too but isn't quite as tasty as yours.....YET. Thanks for the advice, tho. Any idea of the best place to get rad from???

Would you want to get a standard rad or uprated, ie, how much you wanna spend :D

How long is a piece of string. I have owned this car for over a year and havn't started to mod it yet. As long as this leak...okay it blew at 80ish with a lot of steam!!!...hasn't damaged anything seriously I want to start tweaking it a bit. I love these cars to bits. All thats been done is a turbo timer that I know of and a Jasmo stainless steel exhaust. Also I get the goosehonk so suspect it may have had induction done. How do you tell??????

Well if you want to start tweaking it you need to take care of the cooling system and I would recommend a Koyo rad, think these are available from Greddy so contact him for a price, best advice you will get is to keep the car very well serviced and dont sacrifice that to pay for mods.

As your car is red, I would suggest getting an uprated item as red ones are much more powerful than any other colour. :D

Just polish the red a bit more! Does that make it go quicker?!?! I hope so...Just priced a Rad! Ouch...But very tempting too if I can get it past the other half. :nono:

Use man pounds when telling the other half, as a rule of thumb if something costs £300 you say its £100, so far to date I have spent a grand total of £7k man pounds. :D

Now THAT'S what I call help and good advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'l put that into practise forthwith..or fifthwith if that's what it takes. Just hope it works. Also hope that it's only a rad that I need and not new heads as well!

good luck mate, and put some pics up in your rides section, we all like to breeze throught there when not busy for a gander at everyones cars
