Advise please: possibly two separate vibration problems

I'm looking at buying a Z and I test drove an import today. There were two obvious problems and one confusion on my part:

1) at low speeds in second gear there was vibration through the seat (I'm thinking prop shaft?)

2) at about 80 mph in fourth there was a vibration that seems to affect the whole car, rather than just being felt through the seat. The gearstick shook and the steering wheel vibrated as well, it felt like the car would lurch all over the place if I didn't keep a tight grip on the wheel (not a great feeling on the motorway)

I'm not sure if these are related, or if one could be wheel alignment and the other something else (wouldn't expect wheel alignment to cause a vibration from under the car).

Can anyone offer up any wisdom on these two issues? I don't think it's purely down to tracking/wheel balance or alignment. Basically, I'm concerned it's something more expensive!

Also, the confusion was that there was no turbo gauge, so is there any simple way to check the state of, or performance of the turbos without seeing the boost on idle and then when being pushed?

Thanks in advance.

If the turbo gauge isn't working then you should be suspicious as it could indicate a boost leak, although the stock gauges are very inconsistant and often don't read correctly. Not sure about the vibrations. Dave

Welcome :)

the 1st is more than likely propshaft centre bearing, the 2nd would be impossible to diagnose on a forum but it could be the prop too.

Other problems could be tension arm bushings, wheels out of balance, alignment, bukcled alloys, severly warped discs

Your nearest Zed specialst is Ztech (between newbury and Swindon), might be worth popping it down to them.

Why does your TT have no turbo gauge ? If its older than 95 it should have one as standard, best get an Aftermarket one asap!

Other ways to tell for possible problems would be smoke at idle, and on boost, but you really do need a Boost guage.

Its always worth doing an ECU test too : http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostictech.html

Dave, it's not that the turbo gauge isn't working, there just plain isn't one! It's a 1995 Fairlady Z import and from the bit of digging I've done I don't think the dash include one with this model, but I might be wrong about that.

if your looking at buying then take a look in the cars for sale sec on here. most are members cars and your can search the old posts to see if there has been any probs with it.

Legrath thanks - especially for the tip about the nearest specialist.

if you buy of here then let me know. i must be on some sort of commision.

oh and welcome to the club

If its not got a boost guage are you sure its even got tubos?

They made NA's with no boost guage cos there was no need for one.

It was definitely a TT - had a good poke around with the bonnet up.

Should say on the plenum

'Twin Turbo'

hard to believe the car never had a boost gauge

Only explanation is when someone changed clocks over for MPH conversion put in a NA dash in instead????

Its a 1995. From 95 onwards Nissan dropped the Boost gauge.
