u guys should read the comparison posted in a link above, its interesting and will show you how different yet similar these two great cars are. because its an old review you can guage a feel of how the nissan 300zx was received by the motoring press at the time. its interesting really!

Big difference between 924 and 944. the 944 was based on the very sought after 924 carrera gt with the wide arches but they were slightly restyled. The 944 has a porsche engine and the 924 had a VW one. The 944 had a restyled interior to remove the VW ness in about 1986.

There are 2 944 turbo engines the earlier 220bhp and the later 250bhp.

Yes i admit they are now looking dated especially the rear end, the zed looks far better. my biggest grip were the fact they they are 4 pots and i wanted a 6 pot :).

I owned a 1983 944 for 2 years prior to my zed which was 20 years old and it never had a problem. My zed which is 7 years younger lower milage, has unfortunatley not been very reliable.

Join the 944 forum and you dont get nowhere near as many problem posts as you do here, so i guess they are still very reliable.

Not sure about the 944, but I killed a 928 the other night :D First time someone with real power has tried it on with me (since she's been running right), and I was in a good mood, so after he tried to take me on the inside of a roundabout, I floored it :rofl: :rofl: I never knew Eliza had it in her :D I'm so proud of her!!

Eh what are you on about Dave. The 944 is STILL rated as one of the best handling cars ever produced, it can keep with and possibly beat a stock 300zx TT, yes it has ONLY 250 bhp but its lighter and more nimble than a zed, bit like a RX7. 968 is a different car as it comparable with the NA 300zx not the TT. The 968 Turbo S which is as rare as hens teeth is something special.

 

I know your a big 944 Fan marcus, but everything I said was'nt opinion (ok, apart from the dated interior) it was the outcome of each Review test done between them.

yours has'nt been the best example in the past and not reliable (maybe that will change from now on with the work thats been done), but the majority of Zed's are strong and reliable when looked after ;)

Legrath i admit i have a soft spot for 944's probally as when i was a school i said ill own a porsche by the time i was 30 and the laughed, but i managed to own 2 lol. i loved my 944 it just didnt have the power, i was gonna get a 944 turbo but i wanted a v engine. i nealt purchased a 928 but it fell though and now a i got a zed :). After 2 years plus owning my zed im now starting to like it.

In general jap cars tend to be far more reliable, they're over engineered!

Sorry, but regardles of speed, if you own a 944, all your doing is saying i cant afford a 911...

by todays standards maybe, but 15 years ago, they were spot on.

 

dont forget guys, the zed gets a slatting by some for being unreliable, but you show me a 15 year old super car still in mass use as an every day car like the zx

The 300zx is over-enginnered, hence the reason for so much stuff you dont actually need.

 

Autobox is a major weakpoint unfortunatly, although I doubt that many other manufacturer autoboxes could handle anywhere near a 100bhp increase which a well maintained zed autobox can.

 

Manual gearboxes are very strong and over-engineered, except for a rare 4th gear syncro problem in higher mileages, but its a servicable part.

 

Brakes could do with being bigger, but are not as bad as most make out. Most of the time they just need a good service. If you look at the figures, the stock Braking distances are still comparable to modern Sports saloons and Hatchbacks like Bmw's and Audi's, but not as good as your Modern High performance sports car.

 

Suspension is over-engineered, but needs replacing at shorter intervals than lighter cars, thats normal and my Bmw 5 series was much worse for eating bushes.

nothing wrong with the suspension but 15years of wear and little service makes a 1500kg car feel vague

 

brakes,well at the time they were fine and were fairly forward,being 4pot fronts and discs on the rear,again age takes its toll and calliper piston seals perish causing dirt to enter,causing seized and poor operating brakes,and nissan did not ask for people to up from the standard power output!

 

autobox,yes in its day worked very well,unfortuntly again age comes in to it,poor service and oil changes,imported cars with the lack of oil cooler and driven on british roads for years with no care an atention,oh and again more power put through a tired box than it was asked to do,so under engineered bahhhhhh
