I have read some JPEGS on the net from a car mag that had a comparison between a 300ZX TT and a 944 Turbo. According to the review it was a dead heat in terms of performance. The 944 had a very hard ride and the 300ZX was rated as a top cruiser.

Though thinking about it i dont think a 944 turbo can do 0-60 in 5 to 5.5 seconds.

I did think about getting a 944 Turbo. A lot of parts that are for VAG vans u can use in a 944! But i loved the sheer street presence of the 300ZX. Id love a 928 S4 GTS but it would make my zed look cheap to run.

No, but there would'nt be much competition. The 944s has 208bhp, and the turbo has 250bhp, both slower than the 300zx TT.

I am finding these types of figures for the 944 turbos

BHP 0-60 topspeed

944 Turbo SE inline four turbo 2990cc 250 5.7 163

944 Turbo (85-) inline four turbo 2479cc 220 6.1 153

944 Turbo S inline four turbo 2479cc 247 5.5 162

I love my car but have always had a soft spot for the 944 and 968

if it helps you make a decision, there are quite a few reviews of the 300zx vs 944 ;)

Its a much older design. Old technology, dated interior, basic engine and suspension design.

It knocked the 944 clearly of the Sports car Podium on its arrival. It was said to be a cross between the 944 and 928. The performance and handling of the 944, but with the comfort, ride and road precscence of the 928.

There was also a review of it against the 968 (and supra, rx7..etc) where it said the 968 was out of its class and could'nt live with up to the others.

Its a difficult one. I have always wanted both of them and now I own a ZX. I think its a matter of thinking the grass is greener on the other side of the fence so to say. I think both have great looks (the ZX may be a bit better looking) but the Porsche has the badge factor. I want to keep my ZX for the summer and then I might want to change it for a 944 but I dont want to be disappointed. The ZX always puts a smile on my face.

just go and have a drive of one and then make up your mind bud

I have a soft sport for the late 80's/early 90's Porsche (except the 911), but I've test drove a few, and know people who have owned them and they never lived up to my expectations. The 300zx offers everything that each of them offers, but its simply a much better car.

Plus, a Porsche badge is better than a Nissan badge (to the mass public), but a "Z" Badge is better than a 944 badge :)

My wife has a 944S2 and it's a nice car. I prefer my 300 and she prefers her 944.

The ZX is the faster car, as you'd expect, but the S2 does deliver the power very nicely.

I find the 944 a little bit cramped and a little bit dated inside, but I do like it a lot. It has pop-up headlights too. :hyper: ;)

I have had a 944, I hate to say it, but the quality was better than in my 300zx, but thats where the good points end. I can out handle, out perform with more comfort and I get more looks in my zed. The zed is the best all rounder I have had yet.

No Contest.

The 944 was very dated by comparison, and very hard riding.

The dated interior is a real concern for me. Its bad enough to have a 15 year old car but to have an interior from the 70s would be a bit hard to take. Yet I still like the car.

I have a TT manual Zed, and a 944 Turbo (220bhp). The Zed is faster, more comfortable, more fun to drive, less dated, super car feel & looks (Lambo headlights), more after-market goodies etc. etc. You are definately on the greener side of the grass with your Zed.

Having said that, the 944 is a great car, well built, safe and solid, bullet proof engine, good looks, easy to fix, spares easy to find.. But lacking that extra turbo

944s are lovely looking cars but they suffer from all sorts of niggly faults, dashboards cracking etc. I'd stick with the zed. I know the porsche badge is much sought after but at the end of the day people will always know porsche for the 911 and that's the only porsche you should buy if you're thinking of one.

The zed is more modern, more reliable and cheaper to get parts for.

Eh what are you on about Dave. The 944 is STILL rated as one of the best handling cars ever produced, it can keep with and possibly beat a stock 300zx TT, yes it has ONLY 250 bhp but its lighter and more nimble than a zed, bit like a RX7. 968 is a different car as it comparable with the NA 300zx not the TT. The 968 Turbo S which is as rare as hens teeth is something special.

The zed is reliable.

Thats a joke right lol. 944's are very relaible, porsche engines are pretty bullet proof, ohh apart from the 944S 16v which was a crap engine.

I haven't had a single problem with my na, hopefully won't with the turbo either if i keep it stock.

In general jap cars tend to be far more reliable, they're over engineered!

Porsche engines are bulletproof? Did you ever see the top gear where they bought a porsche each???

Did you see how much they paid?, buy a zed for the same money and see how far it gets.

Well mine's selling for 1500-1750 which is peanuts for what it is but its spot on mechanicalwise. Either way what age is the 944?

So we're talking about a car they ceased production as the Z32 came into play, even the oldest zed is still younger than any of the youngest 944s. I just wouldn't trust it.

Once any car reachs that sort of age you'll start to get problems whether its a porsche or a Nissan

I like the 944 turbo but it does look dated now, whereas the 300zx has stood the test of time.

When the 300zx was introduced it did indeed steal the 944 turbo's crown. Not only that but Nissan's test drivers lapped the Nurburgring faster than Porsche's could in their new 928gt

There are unfortunately more clapped out 300zxs around than clapped out 944 turbos, which is why comparing the cars now could show the Porsche in a better light. Take identical condition/mileage cars together and the ZX should still have it beaten.

As for the 968, WhatCar called it "agricultural compared to it's Japanese rivals" in a test against the 300zx, Supra tt and 3000GT.

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

The Z32 is a 1989 design and i have to say comparing to anything around that time its something special. There are a huge amount of 924s about that are dog rough, they look hardly any different to the 944 (i guess the same could be said about the na/turbo zed) but i know which one i'd rather have out of the two.

I almost bought a 944 but decided it looked dated and i think i made the right decision to join the 300zx club as well. Totally better experience :)
