I just finished fitting my short shifter and wow massive difference! Probably helped by the fact that there was nothing left of the old bushes!

I then decided to attack the door speakers, thinking they were just rubbish 6x9s. I have already bought a pair of pioneer 6x9s for the doors. On ripping off the covers, to my horror I found that the stock speakers are not 6x9s but 3" speakers with a port to the side! DOH.

Anyone know if the cut outs in the stock door panels will fit 6x9s? Has anyone fitted them in the doors before? How much do the door panels have to be modded?

It started raining at this point so i decided to call it a day after spending 2 hours fitting the shifter and fixing some other small anoyances.

6x9 no probs but you will have to remove the door cards because behind the card there is a metal speaker cone thingy. some cutting will need to be done allso but after fitting mine i can tell you its well worth it mate

Got 6x9s in my doors mate-i didnt fit them, they came on the car.

Sounds a hell of alot better than the standard ones-ive heard them!

yeah the standard ones stuck! I was hoping to just screw them straight in!

Oh well another job that will take a bit longer than expected! Im gonna change my seat belts soon so will do the speakers then.

What kind of cutting is needed? Cutting into the door card? Do you have to remove the old grill?

Hmm, I think this is the next job for me too, I've got a pair of JBL GTO's somewhere from the wife's old Mini. I'll do it when she's not here, then she won't be mardy that they're in my car, not hers ;) :D

pardon me for being rude, but why would you want to put 6x9's in the front of ya car. it ammounts to more work and tbh you can get better sound from a pair of 6 1/2" replacements.. :x:

I hear components are better with the tweeter possibly going in the air conditioning vent. But then a lot of people have said that they have put 6x9's in. And Edk83 was told he could fit 6x9's but he'd have to cut the card.

Can anyone tell me if this picture is of the stock speaker grill? And also what do you think it looks like. I'll apologise at this point for the poor quality of the picture. It was dark in my car and I took it with my phone.

Can anyone tell what size they are or could be? I should have put a 5 pound note next to it :headvswal

Components are alot better in a number of ways realy, the biggest are easy to fit and the sound stage will be miles better.

nar the hole is almost big enough for 6x9s so wont take much to fit them but the door panel will have to come off. I will be fitting new seat belts soon so will do it then. 6x9s are loads better than componets imo

So can anyone tell me if my speaker grill in the pic above is anything like the stock one?

6.5" is fine.. and mount the tweets around buy the dash vents facing up towards the screen, i would not fix them down any old place, try using a bit of blue tack on the bk of the tweeter and moving the position around. use a track you are used to and keep playing it as a referance, also have a play with the phasing +/- on the tweeter, but leave the bass drivers alone. by altering the phase on the tweeters and some times correct the phase shif the can occure in some cars.

yeah looks just like mine but its screwed on from the back so you have to take the door card off to get at it unless you just rip it off like i did!

tbh 6x9s are just for a cheap replace ment/rear fill. they are good as an alrounder because of the ammount of bass then produce, but are not in the same league as some components

K thanks. I've seen behind it when the toad guy was doing my alarm and there's a circular kenwood speaker. I think I need to get my ruler out and work out all the sizes.

So are all the speaker grills oblong then? not circular?

yeah there is about a 5" round speaker in there with a port to the right of it which is why they are a strange shape

Bit of a blast from the past but... ed, how much of a job was it to fit 6x9s in the front?

really really simple. i had both side done within 30 mins.

You can cut the door card with a stanley blade, screw/bolt the speaker to the door card, then connet the wires.

Simple :D
