Whats the black fan on the front of a rad to do? I thought it was for air con?? But it seems to be running when I dont have the a/c on. Not noticed it when starting up but def going when I get back. Engine hot.

Any ideas?

But it is correct that its running when hot?

Is there an a/c fan somewhere too?

Nope!-that's it,a/c on, the fan will run continuously, otherwise fan will kick in when the engine temp is high.

is there a way we can get these fans to kick in at a lower temprature, or have a switch to turn them on in traffic situations, especially on hot days??

Paul, see Dab1's post above! ;)

I've added a switch and relay to mine so that I can turn it on manually (can do a write up at the weekend, but pretty simple, live to relay, relay to green wire on fan and switch to live and relay).

Not sure how you get it to turn on at a lower temp automatically as the ECU is controlling that function, Andy P might know if he can get to that part of the ECU code.

just the switch idea would be great for me.. just makes so much sense , cool it before it gets to hot rather than its too hot and then cool it , what were the japs thinking on that one!!

when you have time on right up would be great mate cheers

Just for those times when the traffic grinds to a standstill! Turn the A/C off and turn the fan on, it adds a little bit of additional alternator load to the engine, but much less than the A/C does.

I keep looking but can’t see where the hot air escapes from a Zs bonnet; this must be the root of overheating problems on the Z

Here's a quick bit of info to be getting on with, I'll do a proper job at the weekend.

Not shown is the fuse block that I have for my aftermarket goodies (you should never connect directly to the battery). If your are clever then you can track down the original +Ve supply for the fan, but this would mean disturbing the wiring loom to the relays in the engine bay, so I looked at the circuit diagram and decided to provide a clean supply for my switched control.

There are two +Ve supplies to the fan (both isolated by two relays to the same +Ve source), I only used one and assume that if you connected both the fan would run faster/stronger, I’ve only had my Z for 6 weeks, so not yet tested this in the summer, if half speed isn’t good enough then I’ll connect both +Ve fan connections.
