Should be about 700-750 in park, I seem to recollect that it raises a little in drive, as does a manual when you depress the clutch.

750 for idle with the a/c off, probably drop to 650ish in drive with the brake on. It actually says this stuff on a sticker on the underside of the bonnet, along with timing and emmissions info.

My car seems to be stalling or almost stalling whenever it first starts(cold or warm)The revs just drop down and it catches at the last second or else it just stalls.

Any help you can offer?

More than likely a Vacumn leak. Could also be blocked PCV valves, or various other minor servicable causes.

I am still very much a newbie but would like to try and learn more.

If like you say it could be a vacuum leak,

What or where must I check to see if there is a vacuum leak?

Thanks

Mine used to do the same, I've got an Apexi Air flow comtroller that allowed me a tempory fix, but sticking to the same fuel (optimax in my case) certainly helped! My Z seems to be like a smoker, and coughs when she changes brand.

Does the problem solve itself after a few mins?

I also had a blow on my exhaust centre box and changing that completey eliminated the problem, no idea why :-) but from what legrath says it seems a leak on either side of the system can cause this
