rear break shoes

i want to see what the condition of my rear handbreak shoes are like, is there a procedure for checking these ie: removal of calipers etc and then rotor, or can i just undo caliper bolts hang out of way with line still attatched, remove rotor disc and then inspect or is there some thing i may have to do first??
