Back in 1997 the goverment made all vehicles over 25 years old tax exempt. ONE year later they did a complete 'U'-Turn and made it so that there was no exemption for any car registered after 1/1/1973. I'm just wondering if this will ever fookin change. It's been 8 years now. FFS are they waiting for all classics to fall apart so they can fook everyone over:xxx:

What like Fuel

We pay VAT on top of fuel duty so we are paing tax on a tax WTF!!!

I owned a Triumph GT6 that was reg'd on 5/1/73, needless to say, i was reet pee'd off LOL

hi chunk if you could have proved that your gt6 was manufactured before the 5.1.73 registration date you had a case for free tax. i had a 1955 cadillac coupe de ville which was taxed (free) as a historic vehicle.mind you it was a 5.2 litre and that did 10 to the gallon, not much less than the zed.

Here's the reply to my e-mail from the DVLA. Not surprised one bit. U-turning tw@ts.

Thank you for your email.

In the Budget of 29 November 1995, the previous Government introduced a new taxation class that came into being on the 1 June 1996 called 'Twenty-five Year Exempt'. It was introduced to reflect the important role old vehicle enthusiasts play in maintaining the vibrant part of the Country's history and heritage. This meant that all non-commercial vehicles that reached 25 years of age were exempt from VED on 1 January following the 25th anniversary of their manufacture.

The present Government, from 18th March 1998, halted the exemption and replaced it with one applying to vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973, called the 'Historic Vehicle' taxation class. In effect, no vehicle which qualified for exemption under the former 25 year rule lost it but no new vehicles gained exemption.

The Chancellor considered that continuing the exemption in its previous form was no longer justified. The number of old vehicles qualifying for exemption had doubled since its introduction by the previous Government and the number of exemptions would have continued to increase annually. This change should be seen in the context of a general freeze on VED in line with the current VED system, which reflects the Government's concern for the environment.

The Historic vehicle taxation class is applicable to any vehicle that can be proven to be manufactured/registered prior to the 1st January 1973 , which would also include imported vehicles.

In light of this, I can confirm that there are no plans to review the issue of exemption of VED for vehicles manufactured after 1973.

F*** F*** F*** F*** F*** F*** F*** F*** F*** F***ety F***ing F***, F***ing Moneygrabbing F***wits the lot of them. They're so F***ing stupid and F***ed in the F***ing headthat they all need a F***ing frontal labotomy

I hope they all burn slowly and terribly in hell

As you can tell i'm not overly keen on our government :)

You took the Fs right out of my mouth.

We didn't get taxed on insurance until these commie F00x got in, not to mention the 20 odd other new taxes that we don't see.

In this world of throw away goods, I can’t believe that the number of cars over 25 years old on the road is going to increase to significant numbers. There are some 32 million vehicles on the roads, I cant believe that vintage cars account for more than 100,000 of those or 0.003% and once you take account of the static base of really old cars, young ones like my 28year old range rover will eventually die and be scrapped.

In the 60s and 70s most new cars were fleet/company owned, now many average earning families are into buying/leasing new cars, very few people want really old cars, and probably very few of our Zs will be in daily use in another 10 years time. But the penny pinching government can’t see that, it just want to rake in every penny possible.

When you own a older car your recycling. Otherwise you'd be buying new which means it has to be produced from something and large amounts of energy are used in the car production business. They all have departments that look at ways to reduce the life of components in the cars so will either have to buy bits or replace the car. We who keep cars going for longer in this disposable world such be praised and given lots of rewards/incentives to carry on recyling. Big business don't want that.
