Howdy guys.

Well I should be getting a 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo AUTO tomorrow, straight swap for my Kawasaki ZX-9R Ninja motorbike.

I was wondering can anyone tell me what to expect with the 300ZX TT ?

I have had fast cars before, Calibra Turbo, GT Four ST 185, Porsche 944, Nissan 200SX, etc etc.

My mates got a Subaru WRX which he paid £2700 for, he thinks its a rocket on wheels, granted its quick off the deck but didnt impress me after 90mph.

Will he annhilate me on the road being an Auto ? or will the 300ZX remain the straight line champ ?

Also anything to look out for with it being auto i.e. dont kick down in wet, on a bend etc, would rather know now than learn later lol

Many thanks.

Matt :)

Howdy guys :)

Well.. it happened :D

I am now the proud owner of a 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo Auto.

I must say though, car doesnt feel all that fast to me :( dunno if theres sommat wrong with it, but its defo not as fast as me mates WRX, I guess with mods it would be but standard I dont think I would have a chance.

All the same, she drives nice and looks nice so am happy :)

Cheers,

Matt

Congrats, nice looking example.

Sounds like something is up, a standard TT is faster than a WRX. Most likely problem will be that its in safety mode or has a boost leak.

I take it this was the first and only 300zx you test drove.

Does it only have stock Boost gauge ?

If its not in safety mode or does'nt have boost leak, then Failing Autoboxes can also affect performance, or Incorrect fueling from lazy o2 sensors or Temp sensor.,

First thing to do is an ECU check : http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostictech.html

Mine was on castle coombe last week with a prodrive sti behind me and we were roughly the same pulling away untill i got to the double bubble figure so a wrx shouldnt of been to much hassle

Hiya Legrath :)

Thanks for the ECU link :)

Yeah its only got stock boost gauge, would an aftermarket boost gauge pinpoint a boost leak ?

The car isnt really slow or anything, but it dont really pin you back in your seat like me mates WRX does, the power delivery seams far more sedate.

The 300 I just got has had a new gearbox in the past 3 weeks, also when you do 100mph the speedo goes off and its limited to 120mph I think he said.

Maybe it is quick and it just doesnt feel it ? I dunno.. could do with someone havin a go in it see if its proper.

I could take some video of the speedo I guess and try a 0-60, I would guess about 7 seconds as it is right now.

I hope theres no problems with it.. gulp.

Cheers.

Matt :)

i have to say mine didn't feel that fast i dont know because been an auto but when you race people you'll see how fast it is or there could be something up hope not. i was getting 6 seconds 0-60 but as you say it doesn't feel it

Hmmm... what I can do is take some video footage with my camera phone, find a peace of un-used road and record what it does ? any tips on what I need to set on the car ? theres a button near the shifter that does something I think lol dont know what its for, power button ?

Any tips on what to do on a auto to test me 0-60 launch so I can show you the footage to see what you guys think ?

Thanks :)

ok the power button holds gearchanges to the redline

for fast acccel then overdrive off as well

is that right with the overdrive i've always left it on

the 0-60 time should be alot better than 7 seconds... i have an auto TT and used to own a 2003 Scooby WRX...

the power deliver is very different between the two cars..

the scooby gives you all the power in one big lump

the ZXTT give you a wider power band...

to about 70 mph the scooby and ZX will be pretty equal - however after 60 mph my ZX is far quicker than my scooby was.

Air filter and exhaust changes seem to make alot of difference to speed withount risking engine damage by messing with chips or boost levels.

As for auto vs manual acceleration there is little or no difference

The auto has slightly smaller turbo's than the manual TT's... this actually gives the auto a slightly faster 0-60 time as there is less lag and they can spin faster...

I hope this helps...

Nice wheels by the way (they look the same as mine!!)

Yay , another Notts member :hyper: :hyper:

Where are you based bud , i,m in Hucknall

Oh and welcome to the forum :nana2:

Mines an auto , you,ll find that they have tall gearing which makes them feel as if your not excellerating that fast , then look at your speedo and you,ll realise it,s an illusion cos your already breaking the national speed limit in second gear and leaving most other motors behind .

I caned a scooby in a straight line sprint last week, could see the front of his car rising and dipping as he went through the gears but i still pulled away .

( it was my first scooby kill and i,m quite chuffed if you hav,nt guessed :D )

the first logical question is "whats the boost gauge showing"???

Hiya Boldy :)

I am from Mansfield Nottm mate :D

Really nice lookin motor mate, wow..

and you slayin scoobies, well done, that does make me happy.

Hiya Znut, well mate I took a video of me doin 0-60 I will host it here later this evening when I convert it :D

Watch this space vid comin soon, then hopefully you can tell me if mines performing right, 0-60 was around 6 - 7 secs, closer to 7 though :(

Cheers :)

Get ya' ass down here and I'll take it for a thrash!(for diagnostic purposes of course!) :D

Yayy another Notts member :D

Am likin this... your on mate, take her to the limit, when I can get mate I will defo let you have a play and would appreciate your input.

Not a conclusive test, but thats about 1.5secs of the pace :(

N/A rather than TT performance.

Did you try the ECU test yet ?

Hi Legrath

Not done ECU test will try over weekend and see what I find.

OK everyone, I need someone with a good eye for video footage..

Heres me 0-60 in the 300ZX Twin Turbo..

What you guys think ? is this how they all are on Autos ?

I have counted it a few times, I look at the secs on the clip 5 and thats as soon as the revs move and when it gets to 60 its on 12 secs, so thats a 7 sec 0-60.. Saxos will be all over me like a rash lol.

Anyway here it is for interagation..

(right click, save target-as)

300 ZX Twin Turbo - 0-60

What I did was press the Power button so Power was lit on the dash and I put foot to floor and thats what I got.

I did have the overdrive button pressed in, I didnt take that off, but I aint sure if it would have made a difference ?

Your thoughts please guys.. is this how a standard one performs ? cos its no way near 5.5

Thanks in advance :D

Matt (crosses fingers)

Hmm will try and code it into sommat else, it should be a avi ?

OK heres a mpg file which everyone should be able to play :D

300ZX - 0-60.mpg

Any joy ? what you think, standard or problems with my motor ? :(

Thanks

seems to be boosting high enough on the standed gauge, was your passenger over 20 stone :D apexi filter, free flow zorst, chip, and up the boost to 15-16psi and i dare you to tell us your not impressed

Looks like your in safety boost to me but I could be wrong. I thought on imports the gauge should go all the way to the right?
