Does anyone here know about reconning gearboxes?

Like the subject says, do you know the in & outs of what can or cant be done?

I have stripped down my G'box and have found the problem just wondered if anyone can tell me stuff I need to know.

How's it going jezz?

What's wrong with g.box, bearings gone??

If so, they aren't too difficult to get hold of or too costly either.

Hi Dunk,

Right, this is pretty tricky to describe. Will take some piccies but cant do it until Monday.

What it is, is the two needle bearings that go between (inside the bore) the 5th/OD gear and the main shaft have got a load of flat spots on them so it makes a horrible rumble noise.

That bit sounds easy, but because of these flat spot the needles had dug themselves nice little recesses on the inside bore of the gear. Do you know if it is possible to get this bored out 4 thou and use oversize roller bearings or am I looking at a new gear?

Also i managed to chip a tiny little piece off the main gear that drives the counter/lay shaft. can i ignore this, it is a tiny little bit, or should I get it ground smooth to get rid of any sharp edges that a crack could proporgate along?

Jezz.

you could probably have the lot re-claimed, ie. welded, re-machined and ground but this would probably cost more than a replacement!

best bet in my opinion is to get a new one. I would go to a bearing wholesaler for the bearings though cos shops have a big mark up on these.

as for the chip you could smooth it out or have it reclaimed(should not be to expensive)

Cheers little.

Do you think there is an aftermarket supplier for gears, or should I go to Nissan. frown.gif

might be but most likely to be in america though! best bet is to ask on the forum!

Cheers, I'll get a nissan worse case scenario and consider the options then.

another important check on the gearbox is, make sure the baulk ring are not worn or bottoming out, as this will give you crashing gears, whilst you have it in bits.Personally I would change the 1st2nd& 3rd as they get some hammerand shouldn't be too expensive.

The baulk rings are the brass syncho thingies yes?

if so they look fine, I never had any problems with gear selection, just this horrible rumbling noise.

Baulk rings = Brass things smile.gif

This is a difficult desicion to make. Not sure about having them re-claimed, as gears/shafts are induction hardened and the welding process may temper them back slightly. As for machining out gear 0.004" and machining shaft, anything is possible, but you must find a needle roller bearing the correct size to take up clearance that has been made by reducing shaft and enlarging bore. Are there any markings on it? At work we have some bearing catologues I could look through.

What about second hand g.box? are they hard to come by?

O.K. then, what about this. Replace the gear, and if the shaft isnt too bad POLISH it down with emery cloth then wet & dry, get standard bearing and reassemble??

As for the chipped gear, if it is small I would just smooth it down with wet & dry and leave it alone!

Incidentally, my g.box is rumbling at the moment, shall we strip both down and make 1 good box?? smile.gif smile.gif ROFLMAO

Regards

Robert.

PS just reading through an old Max Flower mag today, and found a 180sx making 600+hp!!! Could scan & E-Mail to you if you want??

Cheers Dunk, smile.gif

I have just finished for the day & I stink of petrol. frown.gif

This is my old gear box, i already have a S/H one on the car but this too is begining to rumble a little, but more importantly I'm having 1st & reverse selection problems, nothing too serious but i just wanted to make my old on good again. I have just bought another engine which I will begine rebuilding as soon as the gearbox is out of the way, the plan then is to drop them both in at the same time.

I'm going to find a g'box reconners tomorrow and go and have a word with them, bearings shouldn't be a problem as I've have already found a supplier, cheers for the offer though. smile.gif smile.gif

I'm going to take the two gears the chipped one and the dented one and see what they have to say.

So far though it has cleaned up and gone back together really well, all the other bearings & surfaces are good, so fingers crossed I can replace or fix the gears for small amounts of cash. If not I'm not too stressed as I've learnt plenty from doing it, and if the worse comes to the worse I'll like you say make 1 good box out of the 2.

I'll let you know how I get on. smile.gif

Cheers,

Jezz.

Doh, sorry. redface.gif redface.gif
