Looking for a cheap daily driver...

I'm using my old Cav 2.5 V6 as my daily driver at the moment, but it's getting to be a bit unreliable, too much to insure and too thirsty to have as my 'runaround'. A bloke has offered me £450 for the car so he can put the engine in his Astra, and I'm thinking of taking him up on the offer and getting something that's cheaper to insure and run - and reliable!

I'm far from rich, so I'd be looking to spend no more than £600 on a new runaround, but I don't want it to depress me...

If you were in my situation, what would you be thinking of getting?

1.1 fiesta , cheap on all the above tax insurance and fuel , and feels like a little go kart sometimes , but save you a fortune

plus can go over speedbumps at 38mph+ :)

I have a Suzuki Swift. It does 350 miles for just over 30 quid and never causes any trouble with reliability.

Suzuki is the most reliable manufacturer after Toyota so its not just me being lucky too!

Cheap as chips too;)

Citroen ZX Volcane TD or Pug 306 DTurbo. Only two I can seriously think that I'd buy at the moment if I didn't have my Astra. Both cars share the same chassis, handle well, reasonably well built (for French cars) and still look ok. Plus you get a little more room than the itty bitty Fiesta,

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I was thinking of a Mondeo at first, but I like the idea of a Swift or a 306TD, would consider a Fiesta too.

Any more suggestions are, of course, welcome! :)

clio 1.2 or if youre feeling flush a 1.5 dci.. 60 to the gallon.

Very flush, he's got £600!

Cavalier 1.7td-love mine! Isuzu engine is a belter and plenty of space too!

50+ to the gallon ;)

lol, yeah!

If I win the lottery I may stretch to a 1.5TD Clio! ;)

And another Cavalier? Hmmm, didn't know the 1.7TD was an Isuzu unit, but I don't know if I could have one after my V6, I'd always expect it to be as fast!

I'm going to Autotrader every suggestion and have some fun though...

Some of the early non-turbo engines in the Cavaliers were GM units and not very good. The 1.7 8v TD in the Cavalier is not a bad engine. You can get them in reasonable spec too. CDX...although the diesel CDXs never had the option of AC.
