If the car is in motion and the timing belt snaps, will this cause any internal damage? This happened to me the other night, there was no bang or undue noise coming from the engine, the car just turned its self off just leaving the ignition lights on.

Thanks

Rob

I thought this happened to Takemetothepub and it fooked his engine up?? I could be wrong.

I hope not :x:

I've heard if it snaps on an auto you have less chance of engine damage as the drive disengages when the engine stops, thus preventing the engine "running on" and causing damage.

I guess you won't know until you take things apart........

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

last 2cars we have had at ztech with timing belt snapped it had damaged valves in the process, after fitting new belt it was obvious when one sprocket would not turn, due to a bent valve/s so a compression test was not needed, but new heads were. :( just get the front stripped, check the movement of the camshafts,if they turn ok,get a new belt and tensioner on,and do a compression test, and go from there, you may be lucky, you might not

just to add both were manuals

Ok greg, useful info thx. One of the camshafts turns fine, but the other is rather stiff and needs two hands to turn it. Would it make a differance if its an auto?

they are generally stiff, after is passes through the lobe,it should spin out of your hands.but if they are all moving that a good sign, get a new belt on and tensioner, then do a compression check.

hopefully it being an auto and due to the fact its at low speed, you may be lucky,we had an auto z with broken belt that snapped at 20mph no damge done and a compression check turned out good and cylinders within spec.
