I've got blue/grey smoke coming from one pipe when it's hot. It doesn't seem to be smoking all the time so it's confusing me a bit. The same pipe pushes out more condensation when starting from cold too.

My 3 choices that I can think of are;

Piston rings

PCV valves (not sure what they are though )

Valve stem oil seals.

The car had a rebuild (ztech) with new turbos in November so I'm thinking that there shouldn't be any problems.

Help me please.

Could be lazy O2 sensor that side fella ??

this is sounding promising for me mate, i'm getting the exact same thing..

(just hoping it wasn't my turbo seals)

does it tend to smoke after a long journey when you've parked up for say 10 mins then start it up again? give it a wee boot in 1st and 2nd and it's gone?

isnt on the right hand side by any chance is it?

right hand side obviously being the drivers side? if so then yes! what does this mean?

Been out and had a look in the engine this morning. Had a look at the drivers side PCV valve and it looks like it's been weeping oil. The valve itself is oily and so is the pipe that comes off it and it looks like it's been dripping down and getting into the pipe below. (Sorry, don't know what they all are). Comparing it to the other one which is completely dry, I'm guessing that this is my problem.

According to my recenltly received info on PCVvalues you may have engine oil leaking through the rear main seal. This is most likely due to a fuality PCV valve. they can get stuck closed which results in a build up excessive pressure in side the Crank case causing that engine oil leak through that rear main seal. Hope this is of some help.

I have a similar thing I get smoke out of the drivers side if I am sitting on tick over for a while (sitting at lights) but I have never seen smoke when driving or when I give it some stick.

Where will I find the pcv valve so I can have a look at mine. I only just know where the engine is under the bonnet. So any help would be appreciated   :duffer:

just a question and it may be a stupid one but once the car starts smoking again at idle is there anyway to test the PCV system to stop it smoking again or will the rear seal need replaced regardless?

if your rear main seal is leaking,it will continue to leak regardless if you replace the pcv valve systym, once the seal has perished thats it,all you can do is keep an eye on it,if it get worse then the seal will need to be replaced

if you have smoke and you seem to think its pcv related, then replace all 5hoses and 2 valves, then give it a couple of hundred miles for any oil to clear the intake, and see if the smoke goes,if its still present then you need to be looking at things like your 15year old turbos :smash:

also if to much oil is added can cause a build up of pressure, and yes,a clogged pcv hose/valve can&will blow seals/dipstick due to excess crankcase pressure

Had a chat with Ryan yesterday and he thinks it's the PCV valves like I do so he's sending me out a new pair. If this doesn't cure it then I'll run on up with it so you can give it the once over.

P.S. This is Adrians old car so you should know it well.

Changed the PCV valves today and all the pipes bar the short one at the back of the engine. Hopefully this is problem solved.

2 blokes, 4 hours, 2 valves, 4 pipes, 1 lost clamp, lots of swearing.

What a complete arse of a job to do, I'm not the best mechanic in the world but on the other hand I'm no novice either (I've done an engine swap on my own before, not on a zed). When they say there is no room to work, they ain't lying!!!!!!! I would say if your a pro you can do it on your own. If not, get a mate to help.

Mine has a similar problem

Left is idling for 10mins+ (say warming up for a Datascan test), then drive away blue smoke will come out of the right hand side pipe, after half mile its 100% clear, slow or fast driving!

Is this likely to be the PCVs?

I changed my pcv's last night and it is a right pain to do. The passenger side was easy but the driver side was a nightmare. It has actually made the smoke worse, fingers crossed it is clearing the system.

It does sound like the exact same problem I had. Have a look at both valves on the side of the plenum, on mine, the one on the drivers side had obviously been leaking oil but the passenger one was dry so I just put 2 and 2 together and thought it best to change 'em. Give Ztech a ring, they'll sort you out valves and pipes for around £65.
