Hi Guys,

Wonder if anyone can help..... Engine on my TT has never been tappety or noisey but the other night i was booting it hard going through the gears :hyper: and noticed a rattling / tapping noise coming from the engine but only at high revs! No tapping noise on tick over or when gradually increasing the revs??? Only when driving it hard @ high revs (I should point out i wasn't redlining it at the time!)

Also noticed a slight short rattle when going slowly round a corner or round about @ low revs say in 2nd or 3rd gear.

Veryt strange  , don't know where to start any suggestions would be gratefully received

Just been and checked it and it is a bit low :x: (although above the min) think i'll try topping it up and hope for the best :slap:

Thanks for that, fingers crossed, hope its thats simple ;)

P.S. Is it common for for TT's to go through a bit of oil as my N/A never did and hadn't noticed my TT doing it before.

have you checked the oil level ?

possible big end shells? try revving it slowly from a stand still, it might make a quick short rattle as u go over 3000 revs, i know its not what anyone wants to hear! but that could be the shells fingers crossed eh?

Thanks for that suggestion will give that a go this evening and let u know.... If it is (pls god don't it be  ) any idea what sort of cost i'd be lookin at?

dunno about cost wise, i had that problem on my 200 in which u could drop the bottom of the engine out easily, but i think, could be wrong, its an engine out job on a zed. but if it was and its only just started rattling its not so bad, its if u spin a bearing then its really big bucks! however dont get too worried yet, could be anything, im sure one of the more mechanical minded people could take over and explain big ends if it is, as im no mechanic! but basicaly in a nut shell shagged big ends equal bottom end rebuild.

GREAT! :mac1:

No, i appreciate your thoughts mate, ;) just hope to god it's not that as god only knows how much that would set me back!

Will keep u informed, thanks again

Still suspect detonation is an option as the rattle happens at high revs, although it is equally common at peak torque, eg 3250-3850rpm.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance but what is that and how do i determine if it is or it isn't and what does it mean if it is. Sorry for all the questions but majorily confused

Bottom end rebuild cost me a grand mate just to get an idea.tho if it was bottom end i think you would know it was.

90% of the time Tesco '99 Ron or Optimax but occasionly the lower grade stuff finds it's way into the tank if my choice of fuel isn't available.

Mods : Apexi boost controller, Blitz induction, Veilside de-cat, Blitz bov's & according to previous owner has had a superchip but yet to be varified (as was just written on top of service receipt with price) having a specialist look at it in a couple of weeks to confirm & tell me if anything else needs doing.

what fuel are using jjp? any mods?

again not 100 percent sure but my understanding of det is when the fuel is igniting before it should due to the heat which can damage the internals, when this does happen it usually happens under high load with poor quality fuel, or a car thats not set up very well so it could possibly be that. to be honest though i think youd want someone who knows whats what with it to have a look as it could be det, could be any of these things. just suggest in the mean time to take it easy and not rip the @rse out of it

Ill think youll find you can do the shells with engine in.

does it feel any slower? as the zed has a built in det sensor that puts the car into safety boost if it detects det, however its possible that the previous owner may of bypassed that sensor as its easily done. hence why id recommend a specialist

No doesnt seem any slower but thanks for the explaination on that Jack. Anyway, will top up with oil tonight and be takin it easy (hard as it is! :headvswal ) for a while till i manage to get a specialist to take a proper look, should be in a couple of wks after i moved house AGAIN this wkd.

Thanks for all your suggestions, just keep my fingers crossed its nothin major and will up date you with who had the correct diagnosis as soon as. ;)
