Car failed mot on brake pipes (rear) today, i am going to have a go at fitting new pipework myself.

Could anyone help with the size of the pipework and fittings?, as i have searched the manual and search facility on this site and cant find a size stated any were.

Would rather start the job with the right pieces instead of cutting and going to find bits later.

Cheers

hi mate all car brake pipe s are a standard size(except citroens) and there,s only a few varitions to the fittings, you will need a roll of copper brake pipe two standard male fittings per pipe a pipe flaring tool and a pipe cutter (small version of plumbers pipe cutter) all available from any good motor factor, the male fittings should be the ones that hve a small shoulder with no thread at the sealing end of them (the other type have no shoulder and are threaded all the way along theyre also about 3mm shorter) a good quality 11mm brake pipe spanner will be a big help as well. if you dont have access to a pipe flaring tool you would probably be cheaper removing the old brake pipes and taking them to a garage that will make them up for you. oh and also check removed pipes to see if you need to put a single or a double flare on ends of new pipe i think nissan are normally single flared but couldnt garuntee that. hth.

They're M10x1 fittings

Having some problems with mine. Nissan appear to have used an SAE concave flare on their lines and can't find a flaring tool to match it!

yep just checked on mine as john says sae concave or double flare . what type of flaring tool have you got john.

First had a really cheapo ebay one. Next, a hydraulic Sykes one (type can use on the car).

Have got a bench mounted one on the way to see if that does them.

The sykes will do a concave DIN bit it spreads it too much and splits the pipe. The nissan ones appear to have small ring between the 2 sides of the flare to - looks to me like it's to fix the diameter of the flare.

hi john are you makeing a single flare on the pipe before using the concave bit or just making the flare with the concave bit on its own.

ah theres your problem you need to use the single flare bit first then the concave bit flares should come out right size and without any splits then.

mine need doin, you guys got any pics of original ends and the

type of 'bit' needed for the concave flares??

use the sykes pickavante flaring tool......comes with a DIN mandrel and 2 SAE mandrels

using the 2 SAE mandrels one after the other puts the correct flange on for our cars........just had to do all this myself on my brakes

I've had my flaring tool for many years but I think you can get them from Hal frauds.IIRC the standard brake pipe is 4mm soft copper available in 10m rolls from any motor shop. As for the nuts and fittings if you get the old ones off without deforming them (proper flared spanners are great for this)then simply cut the old pipe, remove the nut and use that on your new pipe........fittings aren't cheap when you total how many would be needed to to a complete brake circuit on our cars

hope this helps

God, am I really that stupid?! Cheers, will try that!

Nissan uses double flaring (this is the more robust and secure). I made some lines myself and you need the appropriate tool for this.

M10x1mm thread, that's true.

11mm REAL brake spanner, otherwise your will crush the fitting.

This kit is what you need :

You make the double flaring in 2 steps.
