Chances are you can recover most of the data but Norton is pants mate. I use AVAST and it has been good.

Rebuild it with XP in a different directory i.e. WINNT2, recover all your data to disc or backup drive, then rebuild again properly....

Have been using zone alarm for the past few months now and ive got to say its fantastic. Nothing has gone wrong with my pc since.

allready lost the data bud .. was told i had to do a low level format by our techy guy at work but he's off sick .. so im kinda buggered now ive got the lappy working again n id sooner get the software now rather than wait till he's back in at work

None of these firewalls and antivirus programs give you complete protection, there's always something new coming out that can slip through the net.

They all need configuring and prompt you for what to do when they come across suspicious activity and unless you really know what you're doing it's easy to run something you shouldn't.

If it's valuable data then get it to an expert quick and they can probably recover it all for you.

If you start trying to reinstall Windows etc you might make things worse when there could be a simple fix.

AVG free edition updates every day and has found and destroyed every virus and it's FREE, I used to use Norton but it made my computer so slow and also let in Trojans.

You NEVER ever have to do a low level format. This is usually only done at the factory. You were given bad advice there bud.

wouldnt have a clue bud .. he's a tech guy and our sytems at work run 100% so im sure there was a reason , he probably did say why but it flewwww right over my head lol

I completely agree with Angus there mate, you should never have to do a low level format and lose everything. You should be able to re-install xp (leaving current directory structure or whatever it says when it asks you about formatting partitions, etc) and still have your data there. You can then save your data on disk or another partition and re-install windows again properly. Just because tech heads at work speak in smokes and mirrors, it doesn't mean they know what they are on about.

Try AVAST dude. I use it and it seems ok. I used to use Norton...fookin sh*te bag o crap...lol

This is security, there is never a single answer and a multilayered approach is always required. (Defense in depth). So good firewall, good anti-virus, good anti-spyware, good anti-adware and common sense are required.

A useful addition would be something like Prevx as well. That tends to help protect against day zero exploits and coveres you to a certain extent for gaps in other defences and your AV not being current etc.

Andy that went way over my pc knowledge head but sounds like whayt i need .. any links or shops that i can get stuff from .. what is prevx? can tell i know crap about pc's

I wouldn't go near the internet without ZoneAlarm Security Suite inc. A/V & AnitSpyware; SpywareBlaster and Spybot running.

I've even got MS Antispyware and AOL Antispyware on too!

Belt, braces and iron under-pants!!!

I run AVG free with AOL broadband, doesnt cause me any problems. Also MS antispyware
