I am looking to buy a nce japanese coupe and previously narrowed the choice to a Mazda RX7, Toyota Supra and a 300zx.

 

I quickly ruled out the RX7 after further checking on maintanance costs and the supra is looking shaky after seeing how much it drinks!

 

My question is about fuel consumption. I know its a tricky question because it relies on how i drive, where i drive and for how long.

 

I have a commute of 45 miles each way 5 days a week. I know most will be thinking "buy a diesal" but i want something that can be sensible when needed but still excite me when i have the urge. I have done this journey in a 24v senator and a golf Vr6 so i know relative costs, i just dont fancy being relegated to a diesal vectra yet!

 

Could some of you more seasoned owners give me some average consumption figures. Turbo or non turbo i dont mind as i havent decided which to go for.

About 15 here doing a 12 mile round trip all below 40mph when I used my Z to and from work, tenner got me 30 miles if I was lucky .............................but.................

when I bought the car in Maidstone and travelled to Glasgow I did it in a tank and a half, even though I never worked it out I thought that wasnt bad as I averaged about 75 for most of the way with a few bursts.

I say if you are worried about fuel consumption to that extent then buy a diesel and a Zed and put the zed on classic ins, with a 3 litre twin turbo fuel consumption is gonna be out the window.

tbh get a small diesel for work commuting and get the z for weekends

 

problem solved + you can insure the z under a classic policy as a second car

I think the best thing is for me to take a gamble and see what i get on my runs. i could get the senator to return 30pg and the golf 28.

Sorry to put a downer on this thread but I'll be honest mate I think the fuel costs are gonna cripple you. Doing those long runs 5 days a week in a Zed will prove expensive. That's why mine is a 2nd car and only used 6 months a year, I could never afford it otherwise. No harm in trying first though with the intention of getting a little runaround if it don't work out. Best of luck with whatever you decide ;)

I can get 30+mpg on a motorway run !, but I usually average around 21-23mpg with urbun/rural driving.... less if its one of those heavy foot days.

 

Fuel tank size 72litres , although I cant say I've ever managed to fit that much in, usually £60'ish of optimax from fuel light to Full.

 

Its more economical than my old Bmw 535i, but as said dont think about mpg with a High performance car.

I don't even bother checking the mpg, when it gets low I just put more fuel in! My daily runabout is a deisel so not concerned about mpg in the zed. But having said that I know my zed is'nt bad on fuel else I would of noticed.

if you drive sensibly all round ,i do 35miles a day to and from work i get about 21 mpg,i dont think thats bad for a big engined twin turbo,if your thinking of buying this sort of sports coupe, i dont think you will get much better than that,and believe me its worth every penny!.

Well you could run on safety boost to save fuel lol

LPG conversion on an NA?

I have ran it dry once - kept thinking the light had only just came on for several days running and after 40 miles or so it spluttered to a halt. Had to put in 69 litres after 2 or 3 from a fuel can.

 

Had it a long time and check full tank to full tank consumption the proper way. In winter running its less than 16mpg. In summer maybe 18 - 20mpg. You cant drive these without putting the foot down a bit!

 

Sure it can do about 26mpg at 70 on the mo way but who does that?

 

In more than 5 years ownership it never ever went over 30mpg. Think of the lack of depreciation instead! A diesel vectra might get 45mpg but it'll loose £400 a month just for being itself. Buys a lot of fuel!

Prolly still better than an RX8 as well.

diesel for weekdays @ 50 mpg and ZX TT for weekend @ 15 mpg..... you will end up averageing about 35 mpg which is what you would get out of a normal boring family car....

I agree if you are buying any sort of jap car like those youve gotta expect to pay the running costs? Overall mine is as i consider good on fuel taking into account the driving i do so overall very happy

I use my NA every day pretty much. On average you're talking 21mpg mixture of motorway and urban if you take it steady although if you really floor it and i mean auto on sports mode with overdrive off you can quite easily suck up 5 quid over 10 miles (9.5mpg!) :D

 

I tend to work on the basis of 45 miles to every ten quid (21mpg) but on the motorway you're talking about 70 miles to every ten quid at 65 max (33mpg and i did do that last week to london and back!) on cruise control.

 

Thing is that at the end of the day you're never going to get a car like that running at 40mpg or above you just have to get used to driving less and enjoying more :D

I going to be using my senator as a work car to save the fuel costs of the zed.

As above for mpg, I used to do very long motorway journeys and I'd get 25mpg on a good day. Now in the towns I get a lot less, maybe 15mpg. For a while I was commuting about 45miles a day 5 days a week and I was budgeting £50 a week. Luckily now I can work from home a bit as my diesel run about died a long time ago! Dave

I've run an na for almost 7 years now (2 cars - 1 auto, 1 manual) and I get on average 200 miles for £30's of fuel. It's a 30 mile round trip to work. The manual seems faster and if anything uses more fuel. That might be because it's more fun playing with the revs in the manual.
