How to spray paint a car?

Does anyone know anything about spraying cars? What method is best to use to get the best finish?

Obviously preparation is everything but I'm more concerned with the actual spraying.

I'm going to have a crack at spraying the spoilers on my 200SX!

My dad sprays stuff. Mainly bike parts and smaller things.

Make sure you are in a well ventalated area, the paint fixer can kill you if breathed in. Also have a good mask.

Keep the area clear cos paint will travel in the air and before you know it you neighboue has a speckled car.

Better too little than too much with paiting. Too little paint means you have to put another coat on. Too much at once means it runs and you have to sand down and start again.

And remember to shake the can well before pressing the button

Paint spraying is a bit of an art. If you want a quality finish especially mettallics, and you want it to blend into existing aged paint I suggest you get a pro.

Otherwise try the web - there is likely to be lots of sites with tips.

Have you got the correct paint and equipment? ie compressor and stuff, or are you using spray cans?

Its just practise. Spray in lines and you start by spraying about an inch to the side of the object then go accross. This stoppes the paint from spluttering, which usually happens when you start the spray, landing on the object being sprayed.

Yes, I'm going to buy a compressor & gun etc cos I've been quoted £220 for doing the tailgate & the rear bumper which I think is quite expensive.

Also I've got a 200SX that need it's bumbers spraying, so it's gonna cost approx £450.

I figured that I might as well have a go myself.

None of the damage was done by me I might add!, it was done my other MF's!!!

I bought a compressor and spray gun a few years back and managed to make a reasonable job of spraying my bike. Bad choice of metallic silver for a first attempt but it turned out OK.

Don't forget to hoover everything and then damp down the dust first.

I have sprayed a couple of cars.

My advise would be only Cellulose based paints are suitable for DIY use, and strictly speaking your council could have something to say about it.

Twin-pak is not suitable for home use, it contains Cyanide, and requires the use of clean air breathing equipment.

Water based 2-pak cannot be strayed at home either.
