What are they, what do they do and do they need to be change as a matter of routine or just when they get damaged?

Cheers

Just a guess but I think they are positive crankcase ventilation valves. The purpose being to suck the fumes out of the crank case into the inlet manifold in order to burn them rather than discharge them to the air. I think it is simply emmission controls anti polluting. The inlet manifold pressure has to be right in order to suck fumes so it doesnt happen under every circumstance. Should think you only change them if stuffed clogged up or leaking inlet vacuum at the wrong time as it could upset smooth running. It is probably possible to clean them with carb cleaner just like for throttle bodies.

Could be totally off track here! must check the manual

PCV = positive crankcase ventilation. One valve either side of the plenum to release crankcase pressure. If you've done a lot of miles (80k +) they are probably worth replacing. Bu%%er of a job as access is difficult. Replaced mine and found the 1 way valve was flapping both ways. If they are blocked is more of a problem. Do not cost much so when you've a spare half day and nothing to do, change em.

How much are they?think I will change mine for the hell of it.

Yes, cheapo but be warned that to replace the valves you will more than likely have to cut the old pcv hoses. Not expensive either to replace but you need to make sure you get the pair that fit your Zed's year of manufacture. As far as I know there are different hoses for the '89-91, 92-94 and 95+ model years. So do your homework before ordering from Nelson!

Does anyone know if the pipes made of standard piping like the stuff they use for radiator hoses and do they do them in ST/ST or coloured SAMCO style?

Be carefull - the PCV hoses have restrictors in them!!! If doing the PCV valves get the hoses too - the hose sticks to the valves and pipes and usually is a lot easier to remove by cutting off wink.gif

This should help: http://www.ttzd.com/tech/pcvtech.html
