Bell housing

Hi all,

 

Have my gearbox off and the inside of the bell housing is covered in sooty oil i can understand the soot due to the clutch but why is it all oily, could this be due the rear main seal!?!

 

What are signs of a failed seal?

    leaking oil from the bell housing...

    mine has it :(

     

     

    Mine isnt actually leakin from the bell housing but now thats its off the inside is thick with oily soot, as if the dust off the clutch has mixed with oil!

    To check you rear crankshaft main seal you will have to remove the flywheel, which will then allow you to view it and see if it is leaking. It is always best practice to replace when you are doing the clutch, just in case. If it looks OK, clean and dry, then it could be the seal leaking in the front bearing in the gearbox, which is not so easy to change.
