Your in the wrong section here fella but I'm sure one of the mods will move it for you into the right one.

Anyway to your problem.

This is a very common fault with Zeds. Mine are a real nightmare down poorly lit roads.

I assume you have an import, in which case to fit your new bulbs you will need to do a fiddly little conversion involving some electrical wire a couple of connectors and a very small stubby phillips screw driver. There is a link to it somewhere. Do a search.

To be honest though, other than saving me some money by only being able to fit J-spec bulbs, it made little difference to my night vision.

To be honest the best way is to probably remove your headlights, stick em in the oven, open them up and clean the glass from the inside.

Hope this helps,

Justin:)

Thanks lads but i bought these off vision bulbs from a link on the forum so 45 dollars later i have bulbs that dont seem to fit my uk car.

How does any one drive these cars without major headlight changes.?

I have sent a email to them asking why they dont fit in the mean time i will have to continue to dazzle everyone on the road if i dont sort this out.

I have a fairly new 300ZX and it has the same headlights and they're ok (if not brilliant).

I think they build up dirt inside the outer glass casing. You can either take the headlight out and apart (not quick!! or some people have had success poking in things through the bulb aperture to clean the glass with the headlight in place.

Better bulbs will help too and a HID conversion is an excellent idea as well.

Bazza I have just upgraded to HIDs and the difference is amazing. My main beam now looks dull by comparison!

check out the before and after pics...

Exactly! The inside of Most zed headlights have an imense about of dirt build up, and owners done realise. Talking apart and cleaning the inside makes a vast improvement, giving smilar lighting to most cars on the road. This is the reason for poor headlights!

Chroming headlight will have no affect, and uprated bulbs will have minimal affect.

H.I.D's are superb, but there affect will be lessened without cleaning the headlights inner first.

chrome your insirts, and put power bulbs in ,im wieghting for tnt truck because i missed him yesterday by 5 mins dooh! mines a uk car and the headlights are crap ,ill let you know if this works or not.

I second what Legrath states above. As I'm now in the "bulb" business as well as being a distributor of X5 HID kits I have found out one or two truths about the 300ZX headlights.

In no particular order:

1. The headlight design is actually good however, the build-up of dirt on the inside (and poor allignment) is what causes these headlights to appear "poor"

2. As Legrath says, chroming the inserts is only for cosmetic reasons and does nothing to affect the light output. In fact, if the inside of the lens and glass are dirty chroming your inserts will only cause an increase in internal reflection thereby reducing the light output even further due to scatter.

3. Uprating the dip beam bulbs to say 100W will have minimal effect if the lens and glass aren't clean. Light output will also be further reduced as per explanation in no. 2.

4. Installing an HID kit will only make a significant difference if you also clean the headlights. Eventhough HID bulbs only "burn" at 35W (compared to 55W for standard bulbs) the amount of light they put on the road is significantly more (ie HID bulbs have higher "lumen" figures than standard bulbs). As per the explanation in 2 and 3, if you haven't cleaned the headlights you'll not benefit greatly from installing HID's as the light will be scattered significantly.

So, in conclusion, the best thing you can do is to take the headlights apart and clean them thoroughly. If you then stick back the original (stock) light bulbs (and align them properly) you'll find that you've gained upto 50% more light output onto the road compared to before. Upgrade to a HID kit and you'll be even more amazed - a significant change in the light output.

And another thing, if you compare the standard halogen bulb (rated at 55W) to a Xtreme White bulb (also rated at 55W but with the inclusion of Xenon gas) you'll notice that the latter burns a lot whiter. This will give the impression of giving you more light on the road. However, this is not the case. It is a matter of reflectivity and bright white light (ie daylight) reflects far better off objects than the yellow light of a halogen bulb.

Furthermore, the reason why the EU (and soon the UK too) have stipulated that cars fitted with HID kits MUST have headlight washers and self leveling equipment is that if the headlights are dirty (either inside or outside of the glass) there is increased scatter which inturn means it is causing glare to other road users. Just so you know ...

Sorry to go on a bit but it needed to be said.

If anyone has any further questions or would like to discuss our HID or uprated bulbs then please get in touch.

All the best!

i had my headlights completely stripped and cleaned out THOROUGHLY, then installed 100W main & dip beam bulbs, and 55W fog bulbs, and the dip beam is STILL dangerously dim...

i tend to be annoying and drive with the fogs on as well, so risking being done and the quest for safe driving costing me even more money.. lol..

i'll get hids one day, no rush tho as its not out a lot anyway on a night..

I thought this only applied to cars from the factory and not to aftermarket kits.

Found this on an aftermarket HID manufacturer's website:

LEGALITY

NOTES ON ROAD LEGALITY AND QUALITY OF OUR HID :

Both versions of our HID systems are DOT approved, MOT approved and fully E-compliant in all safety, E.M. emmission and performance specifications. As far as we are aware these are the only HID kits on the market that meet all these requirements.

This makes our kits ROAD LEGAL ; there is a lot of misinformation regarding the legality of HID systems fitted to cars without headlamp power wash and rear axle self levelling ...these are only an E.U. legal requirement on Xenon systems fitted to NEW cars AT THE FACTORY PRODUCTION STAGE .

HID systems fitted as aftermarket accessory DO NOT REQUIRE the car to have power wash or self levelling ; even the DOT get this wrong sometimes .... our expensive lawyers did not !

This is the current legal situation. However, UK legislation is going to be in line with EU legislation in the not too distant future.

For everyone's information, the X5 HID kits we sell are E-marked, DOT approved and road legal in this country.

Furthermore, in the legal description above there is one major mistake ... in relation to headlights, self levellers are in the headlights - not rear axles!
