I have mostly been driving manuals and my Zed is the first Auto...

Do you get better performace with Overdrive off?

Any tips to get the best out of it? is it better to switch to OD at higher speeds?

Whoa!

I've got an auto box twin turbo that's been in the UK since 2002 - I don't have any receipts for an aftermarket cooler for the box - is the only way to find out to have a prod and a tinker?! I don't fancy a £1800 rebuild, and neither does my bank balance.

If it hasn't been fitted with one, then I reckon I'll purchase one very soon indeed - might even put the stereo on hold...

Christian

How much power can a UK auto box handle. My car needs new turbo`s and I`m thinking of fitting forged pistons and upping the boost to 1 bar, will this blow it up?? I really dont want a manual conversion as i love the automatic

The autobox after around 400bhp decides that it is made of chocolate.

I believe the fast road version ztech do is good for 500bhp

if you dont have a cooler fitted its £1500 from what i can gather from the traders section

£1350 with a uprated cooler already fitted

I am tending to disagree with the manual conversion info now.

Two reasons

The car was specifically altered to take advantage of the fact it is a auto ( Different cam profiles and a different ar on the turbos)

There is no loss of boost on gearchanges just a change of ignition timing to reduce power which means you come straight on gearchanges with full boost.

The only thing i am having problems with is corners where I want to use the torque of the engine without changing down and the autobox disagrees with me

True about the corners mate. The only way to sort that out is to floor it half way round the corner so you get a change down and power mode coming out of the bend. The only drawback of this is that there's a reasonable chance that you'll die horribly.

Still, worth a go.

Erm.........isnt that what the 'Hold' button is for???

I take it this is not such an issue on a mildly tuned NA ?

If it's an auto then I'd be guessing that it would be a bit of an issue - it's just that you can't always be in the gear that you might want to be in at any given time, if that makes any sense...

Still, it's not a problem that bothers me too much as you can still get round corners at pretty daft speeds, I had no real idea just how well Zeds handle until I took mine round the back roads! I'm trying not to do that too much though, as I haven't even looked into low profile tyre prices yet but I'm guessing they'll be pretty damn hefty.

I like to drive smoothly through corners

Problem is getting on the power early as the damn box wont stay in gear and changes down due to throttle position and rpm, so what happens is as if you had lifted off and dropped back on.....sphincter testing times to say the least

lol

Actually, wont the hold button help though? I understood that it was a sort of 'economy' mode (ha ha ha, yeah) but it should try to keep you in the same gear as long as it can.

Isn't that right?

using hold means that it holds the gear change till later , it isnt a garauntee though as the throttle position can force a gearchange, I have tried using it but it isnt a total solution

Is this advisable for all auto's or just the J-spec ones?

UK Auto's already have a cooler.

Uk auto's do have a cooler but it is (pygmy sized) and jap ones don't but they were both still on their design limits when 'designed' in 1988. By now even the youngest autobox is 10 years old and most are 15 years old.

The oil cooler will give you a little longer than you would have had without it but that box will blow especially if you are on the upgrade trail. My advice to fellow auto owners is get out of denial and start saving for either a replacement bill or a manual conversion. If we (the z community) are not realistic about helping our cars through the next 5 years then they will slowly die one-by-one and not reach classic status which they deserve.

The auto vs manual conversion is a personal choice at the end of the day and sure auto's had smaller turbo's and different cams but in the real world some say that a manually converted auto drives better due to faster spool up and better real world drivability. If you are after big power then you would be replacing turbo's anyway.

Either way is your choice..........but start saving

Chris

I always believed the J-spec car had a tiny auto-box oil cooler whilst the UK spec had a bigger one

Could be totally wrong though - I'm sure someone else will clarify this......

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
