Right i have a series of queries about making my new ECU work!!

Its an Apexi Power FC from a skyline and i know its been done before so it can work but i have a few queries.

The ECU's are basically the same apart from a few little differences but the connector and pin set up are identical

But

The injectors pin set up on the 300zx goes like this -

Pin 101 - Inj 1

Pin 103 - Inj 3

Pin 105 - Inj 5

Pin 110 - Inj 2

Pin 112 - Inj 4

Pin 114 - Inj 6

Now the skyline injectors pin set up uses the same pins but the injectors are different due to it being a straight 6

Pin 101 - Inj 1

Pin 103 - Inj 3

Pin 105 - Inj 2

Pin 110 - Inj 5

Pin 112 - Inj 6

Pin 114 - Inj 4

So my main worry is they fire differently or do they??

I could swap over the wiring to match up with the skyline one but then it would fire wrong on the zed?

My thoughts are to leave the wiring as it is and the skyline ecu will think its firing 1,3,2,5,6,4 but the signal will be going to 1,3,5,2,4,6??

There are a few other bits i will need to do but this is the main thing which worries me as i will have to rewire it outside my tuners before he can map it!!

Come on you technical people help me out here :)

You need to find the firing order of the skyline engine and the VG30.

Ignore the cyl numbers and connect the injectors to the ECU in the order they should fire in for example:

ECU

Pin 101 - Inj 1 - skyline fires first - connect to first fire on VG30 (will be 1)

Pin 103 - Inj 3 - skyline fires 2nd - connect to 2nd fire on VG30

Pin 105 - Inj 2 - "

Pin 110 - Inj 5 - "

Pin 112 - Inj 6 - "

Pin 114 - Inj 4 - "

Not entirely sure what the firing order on either engine is but should be obvious when you get them. I would imagine that you'll be OK and the ECU will be pinned out so that 1st -> 6th firing are in that order on the pins and it'll be a straight swap.

Also, remember you'll need to do the same things with the ignition triggers to the PTU.

Does the Skyline CAS have the same trigger pattern as the Z one? Nissan seem to use a few variations so you may need to adapt a skyline CAS or make a new trigger disk for the VG one if they don't match. Easiest way to tell will probably be to see if the ECU registers a resonable RPM when cranking.

Mike the injector pins pulses will be matched with ignition sequence or it wouldnt fire..

therefore if the pins on to the injectors are hooked on to your Zed in the zed order

135246, then wouldnt the solution be to make sure the coil packs were firing in the same order ie put them to match 153246 also ?? .....if you need a hand mate im only down the road , im sure we can figure it out

Hi John

I know its been done before ie put an power fc in a 300zx but ive been looking at what every pin is on the skyline and 300zx and tbh its looking more and more like its not going to be worth doing it, plus there is alot on the 300zx which is not on the skyline so i'm starting to think its not worth doing it.

Ive attached the pin spreadsheet ive done so if anyone can fill in some of the red blanks on the 300zx it would be appreciated as i cant make them out on the on line work book

Does seem like a complicated route to go down. Aftermarket would be much easier. Will have a look at the SS

EDIT:

Actually looking at the SS, it's really close should be easy to get that running. Have you scrapped the VTC on your car as there doesn't seem to be a trigger for that on the skyline. The rest of it should be pretty simple to re-arrange.

I'd just do away with the FPCU and run the pump full all the time. Still use the relay to switch it, just scrap the variable speed.

Presume you're using a manual box hopefully?

Well it started out as an easy mod ie all the pins are the same just need to wire up an extra MAF

or so i thought

80% of the pins are identical but that also means 20% are different and i really dont want to start rewiring half the loom!!

The main reason i wanted to go down this route is its a fantastic ECU which is fully standalone but more important i can get it mapped fairly local by the king of mapping power fc's

Plus its fairly inexpensive to buy/map and comes with the commander which monitors the ecu with a display which is also very handy

Its looking like i may have to keep my HKS F-Con V Pro Gold

Steve, pop down when ever you want bud, i will be there at my dads most of today :)

How much is it costing out of interest?

Wouldn't worry about the re-wiring it should be pretty simple.

your looking at about £900-1000 all in supply and mapped

Kirbs Mate

Have a chat with EggyGreddy, russ got a system (me later) of him that was only mildly more expencive than what you just quoted. And the best part is any tuner can map it.

Yeh russ has the AEM, tbh i was going to get it but again your talking around £1300 for the ecu and prob another £4-500 to get it mapped so your getting upto near £2k for it which is not bad for what it can do but with all the money i have put into it i had budgeted on the Apexi one.

Just had a quote to remap my HKS - £600+vat!!

The skyline ECU doesnt have any controls for the VTC so can you disconnect them and what will happen if i do?? are they just monitoring or controlling?

If you leave them disconnected the cams will run in one position all the time. Can't remember off the top of my head if its advanced or retarded.

Won't cause any problems though but would be useful to be able to drive them from a performance point to view.

They're outputs only on the Z ECU.

I'm looking into options for an engine management system myself.

Will be very interested to see how this goes :)

Good luck!

One of the most important things and often overlooked is how easy the mapping software is to use. Emerald is top notch some of the others are awful. Try mapping a DTA without the dial box - nightmare unless thay've changed it in the last few years.

Was going to make a conversion harness at one time for emerald to Z32 but nobody was particularly interested.

Just an update

From spending half the day trying to get the gearbox on....stupid thing wont line up ~@$%$@%~$@

anyway i spoke to several tuners regarding this conversion and have come to the conclusion that although i really like the power fc and on the face of it its a great bit of kit ie plug it in and has a commander to monitor the engine etc

but

it is very limited to what sensors and how quickly it can process information it can do and in the words of a mapper who maps for the subaru rally team its crap compared to gems, motec, AEM etc

so after mulling options over including keeping my HKS ECU ive ordered an AEM EMS ecu and i can get this mapped very well priced as well locally :)

So its going to cost me about £500 more than originally thought but i will have a much better ECU and another thing the guy said is he mapped a reasonably tuned scooby on a power fc and then tried a gems on it and it made 40 bhp more and ran alot better!!! so that changed my mind

Cheers for all your help anyway guys

Mike

who will get there aem in first, mines great at the moment it's where I defrost the muscles for my fish

the way things are going with my gearbox and trying to get it lined up with the spline my AEM might be here soon sat on the side lol

Yep, tell me about it, they are ace and actually quite easy to play with.

I reckon youd be better off selling the zed and buying a skyline to fit your power fc, makes much more sense. Pah, cheesegrater indeed :nana2: :nana2: :hyper: :hyper:
