Cannonbal Run

Sorry folks, but that comment I saw somewhere in some thread on here (yeah, I know - precise...) about a 'connonball run' style charity fund-raiser has got me thinking. People who know me agree that getting me thinking about something is usually a bad idea (results in lots of time, expense, etc.) but I think the Run is a truly excellent idea.

Unfortunately I have no idea who the people who atarted the thread last time were so if I'm nicking you're idea, apologies smile.gif. However, as nobody followed it up (not starting an arguements here; I believe there were enough of them last time!) I'm offering to organise it. Properly. Chasing sponsorship and everything. I've worked on similar things before for local groups but nothing on his scale so any help would be muchly appreciated.

To get the ball (ho ho) rolling (again, largely carrying on with ideas from the last attempt)...

[*]sponsorship: initial targets have to be a fuel company (we all drive gas-guzzlers), security company (200+ jap supercars in one place has to be a target), the companies each of us work for (most of us are professionals in some capacity and between us probably represent quite a bit of buying influence), insurance firms

[*]public awareness: local media companies along the route are bound to be interested; if the event is big enough national media could be interested and Channel 4 may be intersted in spending some of their 'interesting' programme budget to make a documentary about it

[*]route: John o' Groats - Lands End seems to be the favourite. I'd suggest breaking it into several legs so that people who genuinely can't make the whole event can still participate.

[*]Competition: Not sure how best to approach the competitive side of this. Cannot have a race in any form (already discussed - got to keep this legal and avoid any negative publicity) but if some of the companies on here were willing to put mods / upgrades of various values up then I'm sure we can come up with something. Open to suggestion here.

[*]when: August Bank holiday has got to be a good time. Wont mean we have to take too much time off work, plenty of publicity, good weather (or as good as UK weather gets), good parties at night. Organising everything in time will be tight but possible biggrin.gif. Of course, there's probably a good reason not to have it then but again I'm open to suggestion.

    [*]Name: No idea!!! Suggestions please!

If you are interested then please post here, but if you're (seriously) willing to help organise or sponsor, can you copy any offers to 300zx@shadow-people.com

OK, sit back and watch the carnage.... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif...

James,

It was me and Timmy who started to organise the 'Cannon Ball' run, we contacted all other Japanese performance boards and got a good response, however the response frm our own board wasnot that good so it sort of fizzed out, I really wanted to get this event off the ground it would be great.

I agree with the three stage idea as not everybody would be able to participate in the whole event.

We came up with the idea of everyone putting there vote in for the charity of their choice (from all Jap performance boards) then taking the top 10 and splitting the raised monies to the 10, that way there should not be any arguments (you know there will be wink.gif )

I contacted Shell and BP but they said thanks but no thanks, could be worth contacting them again to see what they say.

I will have a word with the company I work for to as about sponsorship (Aerospace industry) see if they will or know anyone that will sponsor us or the event.

TV would be a great way to go, following us all over the country for 2-3 days, parties, fun and frolicks, I can see it now.....Connon Ball Run [uncovered] biggrin.gif

We could in the form of competition stop off at a track or two on the route and do a couple of laps, best time wins, 1/4 of a mile time somewhere? best way to go is to navigate the route in the quickest time staying within the speed limits (ie. try and do the whole thing on motorway or A roads)

One idea we had was to do the whole thing in the style of the old Cannon Ball Run films, i.e. 70's style clothes....com dressed as Burt Reynold or Sammy Davis Jnr!!

Maybe this is the right time to get things shifting.

I think the idea is excellent, like many other I guess, would love to get involved with this but not too sure how I can help. As thinks develop I am sure you will put posts up and these will give a better idea on how I can offer my services.

James I think its going to be hard graft - and I for one respect you for being willing to take up the challenge.

Mark

sounds like a good idea. In regards to the competition side of it, there are 3 drag strips in England, York, Stratford, Santa Pod. They all do Run-What-you-Brung events on Sundays. We could hit one of these events on the way to Lands End for a mini competition. What do ya reckon??

Sounds Like a plan, I think there should be an official route to travel up on that will take in the RWYB at Santa Pod a track (possibly) and a couple of BIG fields that can accomodate all the cars, tents, people and BBQ equipment!!

The official route can be broken up into 3 stages as James mentioned, with check in points at the start ad end of the section you can then deviate from the route if you think it's going to be quicker to take an A or B road but you must check in and check out in the correct places, what do you reckon?

Could be fun as I have heard before.."I know this great short cut" only to be lost in about 30 mins!

Any other idea's, suggestions, comments?

Get your Pen's and pencils ready James! biggrin.gif

Cool... like the idea of drag strips. Thinking back, somebody mentioned 'quickest time between stages without breaking the speed limits'. Like the idea of that too, but might add 'no motorways!' (bsides; they make for boring driving, although 300 Jap supercars in convoy down the M1 could be interesting...).

OK, more suggestions welcome, but any offers of prizes anyone??? I'll chase this a bit more formally later on but an indication if you're up for the idea could get a few more ideas flowing.

James.

James,

Sticking to A and B roadswould be a superb idea....I think it would bemuch more fun, my personal opinion.

But at somepoints the motorway must be used can't get all the way from on end of the country to the other on only A and B roads, can you? (get your brains working)

We also need to register other people interest in this event. I suggest that all the oter performance boards are contacted and get them to contact you, me or Timmy.

Contact Timmy as he has all the address of all the other boards! (no suprise there!) I would but I have to rush off to work....must be in for 3pm!

Keep me posted,

Matty.

Hi Guys,

We done this one, and the guy running the CannonBall run is from JAPVILLAGE.

He sold me a 94 300ZX which turned out to be a 91. They wouldnt be giving a penny to charity believe me. On further investigation it seems he has done time at Her Majestys pleasure.

There is another trip which is more civilised, see www.EUROTHRASH.com.

Leigh.

Leigh,

not sure but I think I missed the point of that post. Someone did something illegal and didn't raise any money for charity? Can you please be a little more explicit about how that affects what we're trying to achive.

I'm open to advice from anyone who wants to offer it but negative posts with no justification really don't help.

Incidentally, the link you gave points to an advert from a webhosting company.

Regards,

James.

The link is ww.eurothrash.com

The fault was another full stop after the link.

I was referring to the cannonball run, which is being orgainised this year, and the company behind it is JAPVILLAGE.

I read your post and it sounded like you were referring to this. However I am attending the EUROTHRASH event.

Take a look at the link, the price is good and includes two tracks, Magny Cours, and the SACHESRING. The SACHESRING includes a wet handling circuit, a slalom with water jets instead of cones, so you dont damage the bodywork. Timming equipment and hospitiality at both tracks, and all your hotels.

bad day:- www.eurothrash.com

Leigh,

cheers for the clarification... the Eruothrash looks like bloody good fun but it's not quite what I (or, I think, the original organisers) had in mind. What we're thinking of is a bit of fun for charity in thr UK. The links above from the Triumph Club are EXACTLY what I had in mind (cheers TT).

OK, any of you willing to concoct a web site? I can handle all the database stuff unless anyone else wants to but I'm pants at web design work... I've got a server it can be hosted on for the time being (it'll have to be an Access db I'm afraid but this can be upgraded to SQL Server later if it gets big enough); details available to anyone seriously willing to help. Hopefully somebody will be able to sort out freebie hosting later if everything works.

I've got a few things I'm going to be working on over the weekend so hopefully I'll be posting something more definate on Monday.
